THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C. WICKED GREAT BRITAIN. A Startling Exhibit of Crime, Deprav- y and Immorality. A singular and sigaificant exhibit of the march of immorality in the United Kingdom ot Great Britain is made ina recent number of the Pall Mail Gazette by means of a series of diagrams, in which the record of twenty odd Years is placed before the eye in one glance, and it is not a record which ean be contemplated by churchmen or philanthropists without sadness, ‘Since 1361 the apprehensions for drunkenness, and on charges of “drunk and disorderly,” which were reported in that year at 82,196, In England and Wales, have steadily increased un- til in 1884 they numbered 195,274. Had the increase oply kept pace with the growth of the population the figures for 1884 should have heen about 105,000, so that the rapid stride made by this kind of offenses against law and deceney is palpably due to a lowering of the moral character of the community. As bearing on the same general subject, and as presenting an astounding condition of affairs, the fixures of the nation’s drink bill are even more signifi- cant. In 186] the citizens of the United King- dom’ paid for drinks nearly £95,000,000, or $475,000,000. They should have paid in 1876, according to the ratio of the Increase of popu tion, abont £107,000,000, but they did pay the onishing sam of nearly £148,000,000. Some pe for the temperance people may _be gath- red from the fact that the bill sinee 1876 has Aeereased to £125,000,000 in 1883; but this will be rezarded as cold comfort when it Is con- sidered that the natural inerease according to igor! n should have made the sum paid for uors in that year but about £107,000,000. he record of the divorce courts shows also the steady demoraliz tion of her majesty’s sub- Jects. In 1861 but 263 petitions for divorce ‘were filed in England and Waies. In 1884 the number had risen to 703, though the normal increase, according to population, should have brought it up to only 340. With the growth of immorality the passion for self-destruction has also grown naturally, and while but 1,533 aitempts at suicide, successful and unsuccess- ful, were reported in 1861, the number had swollen to 3,212 In 1884. The census of idiots, Junaties and persons of unsound mind showed 76.765 such unfortunates in 1883, against 647 in 1861. In crimes of a repulsive nature. which show their perpetrators to be wholly devoid of moral principle, the increase in the last twenty years especiaily in London and the larger cities, has been startling in the extreme, but it is not ne- eessary to specify these classes of offenses more patticularly. The drunkenness, pauperism and idiocy to be found in the Unitea Kingdom are indications that the morality of the people ts declining rapidly. The chureh and the philan- thropist may wisely ask themselves whether it is not expedient to begin mission work at home and spend some of the money which is now used for Christianizing the heathen in retorm- ing the outeasts of soclety who pass under their own eyes daily. 2 __e@e—____ Assaulted by a Negro. ‘THE SERIOUS CHARGE BY LITTLE ELL BERT AGAINST HENRY CRUMWEL A telegram from Bordentown, N. J., Novem- ‘his afternoon Henry Crumwell, an ebons-colored negro, about 40 years of age, was committed to the jail at Mount Holly to answer the charge of rape preferred by Ellen D, Hert, « 12-year-old domestic in the employ of Capt! Geo. B. Raymond. Crumwell was em- ployed by Dr. Young, whose residence adjoins That of Capt, Raymond's, and the two employes often met, although the’ girl took no notice of the negro. Aécording to the testimony of the little girl given at the arraignment of Crumwell to-day she had occasion to pass the barn of Dr. Young one day about three weeks ago. The negro was working near the barn, the doors of which were open. He approached her as she advanced and as he neared her pushed her into the barn. He then locked the doors and assaulted ber. She also testified that Crumwell had assaulted her betore and that she wasafraid 1 tell her parents, because the negro threatened to Kili her ifshe did so. When Ellen’s father learned of the assault upon his daughter he Sougnt the negro and would undoubtedly have killed him, but his friends induced him to let the law take Its course. Ellen is very intelll- feutand quite pretty. Her mother is dead, vat her father and stepmother are very respec: table residents of Thornton, a pretty little ham- Jet about a mile distant from this city. The 1¢- year-old daughter of Mr. Clarence Raymond in- formed that gentleman that Crumwell also made insulting remarks to her. Upon learning this Mr. Raymond questioned a number of other girls and in that way secured the confes- sion of Elien Herbe: HER- eee Josie Egbert’s Startling ery. A MAN HANGING DEAD FROM THE CHANDELIER WHEN SHE WENT TO PRACTICE MUSIC. ‘The New York Sun of Thursday says: Josie Ege bert, a pretty girl, who lives with her brother, a , at 657 Washington street, loves music, t has no piano. Around the corner from her house Gilbert Vrinden, a sawdust peddler, livea with his wife and tamily at 160 Christopher Street. Mr. Vrinden owned a piano, the use of whieh he sold tor two hours a day to Miss Eg- Yesterday morning Miss Ezbert entered the front parlor in Vrinden’s house to practice on the piano, when she nearly fainted at dis- covering Vrinden’s body swinging by a rope from a chandelier in the back parlor. For a quarter of a century residentsof the ninth ward ave been familiar with the figure of Gilbert Vrinden. Rain or shine, with his load of saw- dust, he drove up and down to supply his cus. tomers at bar rooms, butcher shops and. groce- ries with one oid hdrse and ramshackle cart. When he died he had two horses and two big garts, built expressly for sawdust distribution. He accumulated money and bought real estate in Jersey City. He leased the house in which he lived. He had five grown-up sons who Leiped him in his business. Vrinden had at- tempted suicide before. This time he dragged # table ander the chandelier, put a chair on the table and climbed to the chair. When stand- ingon the chair he had tied a rope about his heck, fastened it to the chandelier and then jumped trom the chair. He had been dead for Several hours when the body was discovered. It is believed that he had drank to excess on election day. ——— Cost $30,000 To BUILD AND Soup FOR 37.500.—The sloop yacht Attantle, which was built this year by Phillip Elisworth, for the Atlantic yacht elnb, to compete for the queen's cup. was sold in 'New York yesterday for $7,500, Ex-Commodore La Fish, a member of the firm of Vermilye € Co., and the owner of the Greyling, was the purchaser.
