Persons remitting postage stamps in payment of subscription or advertising are requested to send one of @ larger denom:nation than TWO CENTS. Those of greater value caunot be used; and will be ‘wtarned to the senders. 00. To Advertisers. ‘Owing to the pressure of telegraphic and other | news matter from noon up to the moment of going to press, it is absolutely necessary that all advertisements intended for THE STAR of the same afternoon should reach the office be fore 12 o'clock m. ‘This is especially demanded on Saturdays, when, im order torun off the mammoth editions ofthat Gay, the presses must start at least one hour earlierthan usual. An observance of this will therefore not only be a favor Dut an advantage to advertisers themselves, Since otherwise it is sometimes impossible to Properiy classify or even to insert thelr an- nonncements. += Twoerrors are macie by persons who do not stop to consider all the phases oi the case in estimating the siguiticance of the George vote tm New York city. The first is that Mr. George, Baving drawn bis support iu pretty fair propor- tions from all the wards, musi have been equally popular with ail classes of citizens. If the people who put jorth this atgument will look back over their newspaper files to the date when the present ward divisions in New York Went into effect, they will find that the system Was bitterly denounced as « gerrymander for the purpose of Keeping one party perpetually in power by distributing the “tenement house Population” so cleverly through the several Wards as to make its vote offset the vote ot the More sparsely settled and cousequently more aristocratic parts. Indeed, the wards where the poorer citizens live, ought, if the claims of the George party before election day bad any solid foundation, to have cast a much heavier vote than they did tor the avowed champion of labor. The second error—and a more serious one, Perbaps, in its influence upon the broader movements of the George party—Is the assump- ‘on that Mr. George's support by the working- men was due to his agressive advocacy ot free trade. Ifallthe facts were known it would undoubtedly appear that his position on the tariff question cost him more votes than it won him. Hs election to the mayoralty of New York could not affect the tariff one way or the other, and thousands of workingmen voted for Bim with this fact distinctly in view. Thou- sands of others whose votes he might have had were probably frightened away by the spectre Of tree trade. Mr. Powderly advised the Knights of Labur to vote solidly for George, yet no one Will accuse Mr. Powderly of entertaining low tariff views. The deteat, or narrow esc: defeat, of so many prominent free-trade candl- ates for Congress is laid. at the door of the | Workingmen in their several districts. Right or wrong, the free trade movement bas not yet gained any headway worth speaking of among the industrial wage-earners, ASpeaker of the House of the Fiftieth Con- gress Will not be chosen for more than @ year, but as the canvass for it will actively begin at the approaching session it vecomes a subject of immediate interest. If Mr. Carlisle escapes de- Seat in bis district it is not improbable that he Will be again chosen Speaker. He has filled the Position with ability and with credit and his Party associates in the House would perhaps, emphasize their esieein for him, by again plac ing bim in the chair. With Carlisle out of the way SS. Cox, ot New ¥ the most formidabie cundidate for Speaker. He apparently returns to Congress with a popular ity rather increased than dimiutshed by his temporary absence from the legislative balls, and bis intimate relations wich tue President might render him the choice of the administra- ton for Speaker. Mr. Springer would perbaps, fee! that his long Service and bis faithiul adherence to demo cratic tariff doctrine entitled him to favorable consideration, and it is scarcely to be doubted that the friends of Mr. Randall too would again bring him forward. Tne cuances of any out- sider, depend, most likeiy, upon Carlisle's de feat in bis district. It he is elected to Congress, the odds are that he will be the next speaker. Anyone who deciares, hervafter, that protec on is a dead fssue in American polities may beset down usa bi:nd man or worse. If Tues- day's vote proved anything, it proved that the high tariff party is resolved to force the fight- ing from this day forth. In every case their Work preliminary to the poling was done qui- ety, but with efect. Mr. Morrison and Mr. Hurd are surely deieated, Mr. Carlisie believes that he is, Mr. Holman’s election is in doubt, aud Mr. Springer Las pulled through by a very slender majority; while Mr. Hi, the leader Of the protectionist democrats, comes back with @ maguificent advance on tie figures of two Jearsaze. This means a good deal, tor the mid- Way elections afford a fair index of the ! Which the next presidential bt is tobe n The Cougressional revolution of 1874 pointed to the immeuse vote for Tildea in 1876; the crushing of the =: at in 1878 Jed up to the triumphant election in 1880 of | the chief figure in tne hard-money campaign. ‘The Democraite restoration of 1882 In Congress was the forerunner of tue change of parties in the executive branch o: overmment de- creed in 1884. In the 1 such precedents, Who will venture to striie protection out of the list of issues for 18887 Who, indeed, will say hat it is not destived to stand firs? ‘There can be no question of the earnestness Of the labor movement as now developed, since {t bas nearly swept over a statesman as di edly popular as Speaker Carlisle. Eve! Supposed his position practically impregnable. ‘He 's admired und respecied by both the great parties, revered as an exemplar and leader by his own, beloved by his neighbors, and in all ‘Ways the envy of his fellow-uspirants for public hovors. At this writing ts election hangs in doubt. A few ballots either way wf tip the scale so as to leave him al home or send him Daek to Washinston next year by the narrow- est path be ever travelea. ——— If Mr. Carlisie aud Mr. Morrison are both de- feated, the headsinip of the democratic party in the House will b claimed by Mr. Randuil, and hischance fora monopoly 0: the Bonors will be pretty tair. He probably thinks that itis an I Wind whieb biows novody good. “Sunset” Cox must begiu to think himself a man of destiny. He wili come back to Con ress just in thine, perhaps, to take part in aa- Other speakersbip contest. Governor Hill wili not be the next senator from New York—that is certain. Will be now switeh cff upon the presidential track? It is thought that Mr. Randall will hear the defeat of Messrs.
