THE EVENING STAR WASHINGTON ION DAY. CROSBY S. NOYES. ‘The Evening star has a rex’ bona fide datly circulation more than treble that of any other dally paper pub- lished in Washington, and equal to that of other daily papers here added ‘The Star cannot undertake to preserve or retura fejected communications. Con- tributors who wish to possess their man- useripts, if unused, should Keep a copy. S@ No attention paid to Anonymous Let- The difficulty of obtaining an unprejudiced opiaion on @ political contest was never more obvious than In the case of the struggle for the mayoralty of New York city, which will have endedat sunset to-morrow. Theestimate made by each party of 1ts own chanees and those of its adversaries is interesting only for purposes of comparison. For any light that it throws upon the subject by itself It is utterly worthless, The democrats give Hewitt 110,000, Roovevelt 70,000 and George 40,000. Tne Inbor party claim 110,000 for George, and grant Roosevelt 60,000 and Hewitt 50,000. The republicans give Roosevelt 90,000, Hewitt 70,000 and George 60,000. It will be noted that, in spite of their dissensions on other points, all three parties give Mr. Hewitt a place above the bot- tom of the list, and that the republicans agree witn the democrats in assigning Mr. George the lowest figures, although with a disparity of twenty thousand between their estimaies. There is no dowbt that the sentiment cf ma- ture citizens in business circles is largely in favor of Mr. Hewitt. This is not because of any disrespect for the ability or suspicion of the honesty of Mr. Roosevelt, but because the logic of the situation points to Mr. Hewitt’s success as the best solution of a difficult problem. The argument ob this point. may be summed up thus: The peculiar character of the population of New York city insures, other things being equal, the ascendancy of the democratic party in her politics. This party, for the best of reasons, would prefer to stand ulone if it could, but experience has provea that, {f it must choose between independence with defeat and coalition with success, it will choose coalition atany cost. Ifthe republicans win te election tomorrow the credit for the reswit will be everywhere given to the George party. The democrats will then make overtures for a com- bination, which can be effected only by the older party's endorsement of the communistic theories of the younger. United, the pair ean do what they will at future elections, and the forces of the new revolution, so long prophesied at-mass meetings under the red flag, will have begun their work with encourazing auspices. Is it to be wondered that the better class of citizens in New York are looking forward anxiously to the outeome of to-morrow’s bal- loting? It is to be hoped that the Salvation Army wil. be satisfied with the fatal results of their open- air performance on Saturday night, and see the propriety of behaving themselves like ae- cent people hereatter. But, it they do not, the Polie> should take the nuisance in hand and abate it by force. There nas been so much non- sense uttered from the platform and in the press about religious liberty that occasionally sensible citizen I» misled into sympathizis with the crew who make Washington's peace- faleveuings hideous. If a calithampian band were to insist upon parading the streets every night 1m the year, hammering pans and blow- ing fish-horns and waving colored cloths in the air, the authorities would speedily put a stop to their fan. Drunken orgies may go on ‘Within-doors whieh would not be tolerated for @ moment in the highways. There is no reason why a party of nolsy revelets, whose boister- ousness is the result of seif-wrought nervous exeitement, should be granted special privi- leges in the thoroughfares of the city because they claim to be worshiping the deity. Ifthe Salvation Army find any comfort in raising an serpiercing rucket in their barracks, nobod: but their neighbors would care to interfere wi them. But their assertion of a right to revolt the feelings of order-loving church people and cause misery to the senses of the whole popu- lace of Washington ought to be met with a ‘Very prompt rebuke. There is a point where “forbearance ceases to be a virtue;" and pity for their ignorance and contempt for the ab- surdities they practice should no longer be per- pitted to gloss over the fuct that they are grossly abusing the liberty whieh is given them for @ rational use. —<——— When Mr. Powderly reads his newspaper to- day he will learn that two well-known Knights of Labor played conspicuous parts at the an- arebist meeting addressed by Mrs. Pursons in Philadelpisia yesterday. What is the status of such men in the organization over which he presides? Can they take a prominent share in the anarebist propaganda and maintain their standing as Knights? Is there no rule of the great labor society which will compel them to choose between agitation for reform within the ‘aw and agitation for the destruction of all taw and all property? Itis by such representatives that the whole body of Knights Is discreaited, ‘end the enemies of the order rejoice wheneve> they learn of euses like these, confirming the worst statements they have ever made in its disparagement. Ifthe Knights ot Labor every- where would expel, with no longer delay than is necessary for an honest investigation, any member who lends his voice and influeuce toa war upon society, they could make a greater stride toward the end they claim to seek in one Year than they can now make in ten. The present democratic majority in the House may be reduced somewhat by the elec- tions to-morrow, but there is no probability that it will be wiped out altogether. Tar Procisuen:, MESSRS.
