THE BARTHOLDI's GREAT STATUE. ‘The Colossal Size of the Figare. . From the New York Tribane. The statue measures 151 feet and 1 Inch from the bottom of the plinth to the tip of the torch fiame, and stands In all 305 feet and 11 inches above low-water mark. The forefinger of the goddess’ right hand is over seven feet long and over four feet in circumference at the second Joint, The eye is two feet wide and the nose more than three feet long. The total weight of the statue is about twenty-five tons; it cost in making over a million of francs. ‘The Goddess of Liberty Is the largest work of itekind that has ever been completed. The legendary Colossus of ithodes couid not possibly have had the shape or bigness attributed to it. ‘The colossal statue of Arminius, in Bavaria, is about ninety-four feet in height; x Charles Borromeo on the shores of Lake Magziore, seventy-five feet. The Virgin of Pay comes ‘next, fifty-two feet, and the statue of Tiavaria last scarcely more than a toot shorter. Allo! them shrink oat of countenance beside ue gigantic copper figure on Bedlow's Island. ‘The colossal in art, it is generally understood, can be used to express only a limited. number of ideas. It must represent, if possible, some Yast abstraction, and carry with it alwaye the suggestion of power, majesty or Infinity. Its peculiar eifect is that of the phy subitme, touched and heightened by the idea of. moral sablimity. And sot is not the mere legendary goddess, with more than maniy strength and more than womanly stateliness, clear-eyed, and wise and patient, Nike Minerva, that the Sculptor means really to represent. ‘The figure of a graceful, deep-vrowed wornan 4s there, whose ricly-pleated robes hang in soft rounded foids about her shapely breast and limbs, the pure, clear face, and the luxuriaat hair crowned with a sparkling diadem of light. But through it all shines, as it cught to shine, the suggestion of that eager, prose!y ting passion for liberty for which the men of the revolution spilled their blood in France and America, and which, If in modern days, only one of a sheal of memories, Is for both countries the most prized of them ail. This, at least, is the inspiration Barthold! has striven to put into the great statue. It ison this that he and M. Laboulaye have counted for the figure’s “far-reaching moral effect.” ee The Ideal Sieeping-Room. M, J. Plumstead, in Good Houskeeping. The “ideal sleeping-room’” will face the east. It will be not less than fifteen feet square, with windows on two sides for light and ventilation. For further ventilation it will have an open fire place. The walls will be hard-finished and Unted a color that will be restful to the eye. ‘The woodwork will be finished in its natural color, paint not being admitted. The floor wiil be of hard, polished wood, with small rags tor comfort that are shakable weekly. Everything that wouid invite dust will bes excluded, thereiore the furniture will have no extra carv: ings. ‘The one hair mattress will be of the best quality, made in two parts for convenience in Turning and airing, with a woven-wire spring Peneath.
