AT LIBERTY'S UNVEILING. There Will Be a Great Time in New York and in the Harbor. THE LAND PARADE AND THE PARADEUPON THE WATER—PRESIDENT CLEVELAND AND DIS- TINGUISHRD GUESTS—CANNONS AND FIRE- works. 3 From the New York Sun. The work of preparing the big Bartholdi Statue of Liberty for the unveiling ceremonies of next Thursday is rapidiy drawing toan end. ‘The statue itselt is practically complete, the Work yet to be done being chiefly about the Stairway leading to the top of the torch, and about the arrangement of the lights in the toreh itself. The arrangements for the cere monies of the day are not so near completion a8 the object of .the ceremonies, because it 1s ‘as yet impossible to tell now many will take part in them. Ouly a general outline of the Program of the day has been determined on. ‘The program begins with a land le. ‘The people who will participate in this wili gather in Fifth avenue, near the Park, pretty early, for the line must be got in motion in time to reach the Battery at 12 o'clock. The troops that will lead the line wil form in Fifth avenue, and the other military and civil bodies "will form tn the side, streets, ready to mareh in as the line proceeds. It 1% poxsible, how that to save time the line will form at 42d" street or thereabouts. ‘The line of march will be down Fifth avenue when the ving will permit, and down Madison avenue . When hot, to Madison square, and thence down Broadway. The grand stand trom which Presi- dent Cleveland will review the parade will be efected as usual on such occasions near Worth monument io Madison square. The stand will be occupied by M. de Lesseps, M. Bartholdi, the American committee, and other Freneb and American dignitaries. As soon as the parade has passed the stand the President will hasten in a carriage to the foot of west 234 street, where the United States steamer Despatch will be in waiting to convey bbim to Bedioe’s Island. THE LAND PARADE. No adequate idea can yet be formed of the extent ofthe land parade. The old volunteer firemen of this city will be out with old-time engines to revive the memories ot other days. ‘The Grand Army posts will fill no end of space. New York city alone will turn out 5,000 men, besides thirteen posts of Sons of Veterans. Long Island and Jersey will be scarcely behind am the number of men in line, while small squads and single members troni all over the country will falt in. Such military bodies as the Old Guard, the veterans ot the 7th regl- ment, the Washington Continentais of Wash- i ‘and the Nizza (Italian) cavulry will be Out in force. “The first brigade will tae part in the parade by order of Brig. Gen. Fitzgerald. ‘The navy yard and naval vessels wilt send 1,000 seamen and marines to join the proces- sion and show the spectators what sort of stuil American sailor men are made of. ‘The army posts hereabouts will alone contribute enough iien to make a parade worth seeing. So far as heard from represepiative bodies will be pres- entas far east as Boston, west as Chicago, and south as Buitimore and Virginia. Many shops and factories will send delegations of their workmen to march in the procession. School ebiidren will not be wanting, while such secret societies as the Knights of Pythias have begun to make application. Ail the French societies ip this and neighboring cities will take part in the parade, besides many other societies of like nature. Over fifty societies of this Kind have made application. THE DISPLAY ON THE WATER will be more imposing than anything of the kind ever seen here before. The excursion feet that during the sammer carried the people Yosuch resorts as Coney Isiand, Rockaway beach, Gien Islaud and the picnic grounds ‘along the Hudson has, in great part, been char- by various organizations ‘hat will partici pate in the land parade. In addition, many ‘Other steamers have been brought out of winter quarters to carry the tens of thousands of spec- tators that will want to see the ceremonies on the water and on the isiand from such excel- Jent points of view as the decks of harbor steamers. Then the tugs and lighters that happen tobe idle at the time of the naval je. and that will include about all the ‘affords, for business will be generally suspended, will join in the procession. A fleet ofsteam yachts, perhaps one of the French Line's great ocean steamers, and a host of light- ‘house, revenue, coast survey and other govern- ment steamers and steam launches and torpedo Doats wil: join the line. ‘The vessels that will take part in the naval Parade will gather off the foot of west 42d street and await the signal which will announce $hat the jand parade hus reached the Battery. y some government steamer, per- haps the trim coast survey boat Gedney, tho ‘Hevt in double column will steam down North river, around the naval fleet tnat will lie at anchor off Bedioe’s isiand, and form a creseent Below the Isiand. The naval vessels will in- elude the Tennessee, Yantic, Minnesota, Alii. ance, Saratoga, Jamestown and Portsmouth, Besides the new: steel cruiser Atianta, abd thé t Dolphin. Tue Saratoga, James- town and Portsmouth ‘are the naval training ships, and will contribute a handsome quota of bright young sailor boys to the laud parade. naval vessels will anchor in line of battle Off the isiand, and with them will be the three French mev-ofwar that are to participate in ‘the ceremonies, The maneuvering of the great Reet of vessels will be accompanied by no end of cannon Salutes will be fired at sun- Fise, when the President lauds on the island, ‘Bea the vell ie drawn trom the luce ol Liberty, When the sun goes down, and whenever an: other excuse is otfered. ” CEREMONIES ON THE ISLAND. ‘When the President reaches the island the ceremonies will begin there. A stand for the speakers and principal guests has been erected there, with seats around it for 3,500 other guests, There will be singing of French and American national songs by societies not yet selected. A minister not yet determined on will Invoke the biessing Of God on. liberty loving people. Senator Evarts, a8 chairman of ‘the American Liberty Statue committee, will make an address, and Chauncey M. Depew will deliver the oration. The ceremonies on the island will end when Bishop Potter pronounces ‘a benediction. ‘The veil which covers the tace of Liberty at big enough for a present is a piece of canvas Ship's topsail. it will be replaced, however, by french flag betore Thursday. A big a new stage has been erected well out into the angle "a Governor's Of the old tort that points tow: Asiand. This is for the use of the speakers. A lativrm hus been placed broader bat lower i against the foundation mass of the pedestal for Ihe use Of the Presigeat and those ‘with him.
