CHARLES CAUGHLIN'S DAUGHTER-T THE STOLEN WoNRY IN HEE SLEEP. ‘The Philadejphia Zines, October 20, says: About three weeks ago $3,597, the savings of a lifetime, were stolen from Charies Caughlin, of 2240 north 26th street. Mr. Caughlin, who is | over 70 years of age, with his wife, wite’s brother, also very old, and a bired man, are the only occupants of the house. The old gentleman does not even now suspect any par- licular person of committing the robbery and has no theory as to how it was perpetrate soe Bold Work by a Negro. PERSONATING A POLICEMAN TO FURTHER HIS ATTEMPT TO ASSAULT A WHITE GLEL. Louisa Lrown, a pretty and innocent-looking girl of 17, was complainant in a St. Louis police court Tuesday against Henry Anderson, a mu- Jato, She said she was sent toa grocery Mon- day night from her home, at 2120 Morgan street, and on the way back she meta young man with whom she was acquainted. They chatted for a few minutes and separated. Just as the young man turned the corner Anderson ‘stepped up to her, and, placing his hand on her shoulder, said he arrested her, that the young an she had been talking with was a notorious thief, and she was charged With associating with’ ‘thieves. ‘She denied the charge. He told her he was assisting @ policeman who had gone after the man, The girl went ‘with the negro unwillingly, and says that two blocks from where he spoke to her they were Joined by another negro, who produced a key, ‘which, he said, belonged io a patrol box. ‘They threaiéned to put her in the patrol wagon, but Anderson, she says, promised to let her go if She would consent to. proposal tbat he made. On her refusing he dragged her along. Eight Diocks further on they met a policenian, who noticed that the girl was crying. She told’ him thut the negro bad arrested her. The latter ex- plained tuat be was on the staff of Hugh O'Neil, ‘ehief of detectives. The policeman arrested him on charges of disturbing the peace and personat- ing policeman. When Judge Cady heard the evidence he said that he regreited that his hands ‘were so tied that he could only give the fellow ‘@ year im the workhouse, aud fine him 3500 for disturbing the peace anil $100 for represent- ing humselt to be a policema: tor Is the Coast Sinking THEORIES TO ACCOUNT FOR THE DESTRUCTION ‘OF SABINE PASS. Beaumont, Tex., Special to the N. ¥. Times, Oct. 19. Nothing is talked of here except the unprece- dented tidal flood around Sabine and its extra— ordinary results. Since the older residents of this vicinity have gone over the ground and discovered what an immense stretch of coast country was submerged. they generally agree that the Texas and Louisiaua coast about the mouth of Sabine river is gradually sinking, and they think it’s only a matter of a tew decades until the sea will claim a large slice from both these states. A gentleman who has lived on the coast for 50 years makes the statement to the Time's correspondent that up wo the year 1860 no se Flous overflow bad occurred between Berwick Bay, on the Louisiana coast, and Galvestoa Bay: There was not even a tradition among the white settlers of any overflow during this Tong period, extending back to about the year 1780, whea the Louisiana coust in. that vicinity was first settled. In 1867 the streets of Sabine were submerged by a high tide for the first time since its ioun- dation in 1832. Since 1867 there have Deen 18 disastrous overtiows, three of which ‘occurred during the present year. This extraor- dinary increase in rial forces and overflows since the year 1560 not only applies to the 100- mile strip of coast contiguous to the Sabine’s estuary, but appiies with the saine mathe- matical’ accuracy to the entire Texas coast irom Subine to Galveston, thence to Indianola and Corpus Christi, nearly down to Browns Ville, at which latter point the storms since 1860 have been jess severe than during the Preceding quarter of a century. The oid settlers Who bave compiled this duta cannot account for the phenomenal inerease, except on the basis that the eutire Texas coust has subsided &# foot oF two since 1860. ‘The Orange Tribune descanting upon this the- ory, Suggests that the matter should be made the’ subject of scientific investigation, and ought to have thorough and immeuiate Atten- tion from the general government. The Tribune calls upon the people of the first and seventh Cougressiona: districts of Texas to Join with the districts of west Louisiana and Immediately upply to the War and Navy departments for a Joint corps of competent engineers and scien- Usts to establish the exuct altitude of the coast on both sides the Sabine tor a distance of at jeast Hity miles inland. Sueh a course, it de- | clares, wouid put ut rest the feelings of anxiety used by the now jocaily widespread. belict that the Suriace of the earth in this section Is gradually sinking. cee & Wife's Suicide. ¥AREWELL LETTERS To HUSBAND AND FRIENDS.
