STRANGE NOISES AT NINETY-SIX. jerious Phenomena Which m South Carolina People. s phenomena at Regarding the myster Ninety-Six, Abbeville county, 5. C.. & eorre- spondentof the Baltimore Sun, whogave several tes: Mr. J. MeD. lays to investigating them, W? Kinard, one of the most progressive farmers of the county, says: “I first heard the underground nolse in January, 1585. The sound was ‘dead; that is, brief and without reverberation; asloud as the report of a cannon fired three or four Tnoticed it pretty frequently the first day; then for two or three weeks I didn’t hear it all. For a long time before the great Charleston earthquake there was no rej of the quake Was not similar; it was in of cars, while the Other reports were more like that made by the falling of a dead tree than anything 1 ean think Of. The effect was to sbake the house and rat- te the sashes T last heard the sound on Mon- y of this week about 1 a. m.” “Sir. John "Williamson, a. well-to-doy farmer, says: “My house is just beyond Ninety-six ereek, and three-quarters of a mile from Mr. J. Mep.’ Kinard’s. 1 have been hearing these noises since last September a year ago. They sound like # big cannon at a distance, or & Dig dead tree falling. They shook the earth, ‘and were over In a few seconds. ‘Sunday night ‘@ week ago there was one that shook the house ior baif aiminute. I bad time togooutou the piazza before it stopped. ‘The second seemed to Come from the southeast. Last Sunday night Wwe heard it ten times. Two were severe and the others light. My house is a new one, and itereaked and the windows and the dishes in the safe rattled. It wus frightful. For two weeks, until this week, I didu't have a good night's sleep. 1 beard the nuises every nignt, and also in the daytime. ‘The Charlestonearth- quake was felt more distinctly.” Capt. J. Harris Brooks, of the United States interual revenue service, said: “I live about five miles south of Mr. Kinard’s, and heard the 1s Lwo Or three tines before the Charleston earthquake. ‘They sounded like heavy artillery in the distance; lor example, like the siege guns in the Sumter’ bombardment, beard filteen or twenty miles off. ‘The negroes on my place say they bear them still.” John M. Walker, who lives six miles from the village, and who i5 regarded ay a reliable mar, says, and bis neighbors corroborate him, t ‘uring the war he would come to town and tell Of hearing at his place the guns fired in the bom- bardment of Charleston, There was @ valley Which he used to frequent, and there it was that he stated that he heard the cannon distinetly enough to count the shots, There was no tele- graph line to Ninety-Six then. The next day the Charleston papers would report the number Of shots which he claimed to have heard. There ‘was no evidence of any underground hollow on his place. On the 25th of June, 1868, there was a shooting afiray in Ninety-six. ‘Seven Pistol shots were fired. Without yeaving his place Mr. Walker told_his wife that there was shooting going on in Ninety-Six ‘The correspondent conciudes: “There can be no doubt o: the truth of what these witnesses testliy, and thelr story Is a startling one in view of the’ recent disturbances in Charleston. Ac~ cording 10 the geological map of the state, is- sued by the Agricultural department, the small section of country near Ninety-Six, affected so long and coustautly in the manner described, vaius trap and porphyry tion of the azoie age. Its distance trom Charies- ton js one hundred and fifty miles in an air line. soe THE ANDOVER CREED. Religious Circles Greatly Excited Over the Question of re Probation. -A telegram from Boston, October 10, says: Tue doctrinal dispute which agitated the meet- tag of the American board of commissioners for foreign missions, at Des Moines, last week, has already led to proceedings which will at ouce bring the questions Involved to a decisive issue before the denomination at large. Three prominent Congregationalists, two ot them re- Ured pastors, have brought charges ot heresy against five of the professors ot the Andover ‘Tueological seminary. The matter will come up for hearing before the board of visitors two weeks hence and from them will doubtless be appealed to the supreme court. Half the trust funds of the institution are conditioned upon the doctrinal views of the professors and the supreme court will be asked to pass upon the question whether these conditions have been complied with. The chief point at issue ts involved in the question, Does death end all? The accused Protessors are charged with believing and teach- jug a second probation. ‘The form in which the matter is befure the American board is whether itis heresy to believe that heathens who died without bearing the gospel have another chance for salvation instead of going straight to hell. The old school say their doom is sealed. The Andover new departure is cuarged with giving ‘them another chance after death. The old Ando- Yer creed which the conditions of the trust iund Fequire must be strictly maintained renders the auodern and more liberal doctrine searcely pos- sible. The professors are required to appear betore the board of visitors ouce in five years, and read and reaffirm their belief in the old creed. This they have done thus far. A prominent member of the board of trus- tees, Who appoints the professors, subject to the ‘approval of the board of visitors, said to-night that the issue might as well be met and settled publicly and finally. He regurued the action of ive tree compiainants as simple rsecution, but he thought the time had coine for the seminary and the denomination at large tocome tosome understanding regarding the disputed dogma, and, i! 4 division must come, nothing could be gained ey longer postponing” it. He declined to naime the aceusers, Dut said they had no interest in the funds wiieh they charged were veing used in violation of condi- lions. One of theun 13 said to be Joseph Cook. ‘The alleged heretical professors are the editors of tue Andover Keriew. The wnoie subject is the burning religious question of the hour in Boston and New Eng- land. Nothing bas excited suea interest within the past quarter of a century. In this city a large majority of the members of the denoini- hation sympathise with the new departure. ‘The only old school pastor in the city is the Rev. Dr. Withrow, of Park street, who took a prominent part in’ the Des Moines convention. THE PROFESSORS WHO ARE TO BE “CHURCH MAULED.” A telegram to the New York Herald last night says: The report that several of the An- dover professors Were to be “church mauled” on account of teaching heresies and other irregular conduct has made a big sensation in eastern Massachusetts, which has prided itself on being orthodox to the core lor the past two hundred years. The names of the proiessors concerned, as given in Bosvon, are Rev. ©. Smytu, Db. D.; Kev. William'J. Tucker, D. D.; Kev. George Harris, D. D5 Kev. Edward Y. Hineks, D.D., and Prot. J.’Wesiey Churebill, while Gulliver, who’ was mentioned in, the Des Moines proceedings, is not one of the wen who clain “probation alter death.” Some lume ago the supreme court declared that the fail control of Andover seminary. was vested in the board of visitors, and itis thought that tue board is iuciiped tward the conservative party and will show the innovating professors fo mercy unless they retract. It is certain that the “Andover hypothesis,” so called, is not popular among the Conzrezationalist ministers fa'Boston, wuiie the churen members whe do any thinking for themselvesare wholly agalust i oo ____ The Litigation Over Blind Tom. WIS MUTHER'S SUIT DENIED BY A NEW YORK courr. Judge Donokue, of the New York city supreme court, has denied the application of Mrs. Charity Wiggins, the mother of ‘Thomas Wiggins, known as “Blind Tom,” the pianist, to have bis mental condition inquired into by ‘ committee and his estate cared for. Tom was born in slavery in Georgia In 1549, and with all his family was sold to James W. Virginia ‘Tom was declared @ lunatic, and Mr. Betuune's son, John C. Bethune, was declared a com mitiee of his person. The latter acted as Tom's manager unUl 1554, when he died. The elder Bethune was then appotuted.
