—_S_ A THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. THE EVENING STAR WASHINGTON FRIDAY... ... September 24, 1888. CROSBY S. NOYES. Editor. ‘The Evening Star has a regular, permanent bons fide daily cireulation more than treble thi ‘any other dally paper pab- Mahed ti ton, and equal to that of sll the other daily papers here added Saturday Advertising. Advertisers will confer a favor by handing in their announcements as early as possible for tomorrow's sixty-four column STAR, in order to Insure insertion and proper classification, —— ‘The Treasury clerks who are reported as alarmed at the prospect of Mr. Manning's Fesignation of his portiolio, because they fear that s new Secretary would make a general sweep of beads of bureax and other persons im authority, are suffering quite needless anxiety except in those cases where it is the outgrowth of a personal sense of inefficiency. ‘The idea of retaining in office those depart- ment clerks who have proved themselves of value to the government has gained greatly in favor with the present administration, from the President down, since it has been put to a practical test. The people have applauded it so generally that even many of the professional politicians have felt compelied to join in the chorus of praise. Civil service reform is some- ‘hing more than a giortous abstraction now. The new treaty with Canada, the terms of which have leaked out through the newspapers, Will be subject to a gvod deal of discussion between now and the assempling of Congress im December. There are features of it which will provoke censure and others that will ex- cite admiration; but if it is of any advantage t the administration and to Congress todo what a majority of the citizens of the United States will approve, there is no more satistac- tory test than that which will be applied in the popular forum during the coming eleven weeks. Here isa blessing of newspaper enter- Prise whieh our public servants do not always Gstimate at its true value. a The best bank currency the world ever saw is im danger of extinction through the rapid Mquidation of the national debt and the failure Ofeither bankers or government to devise any other equally youd security for cireulation. The plea of the banks to be allowed to retuin called bonds, without interest,as a basis tor their notes, does not seem at all unreasonable, if an honest construction of the law wiil permit this tobe done. The noteholder would be just as well protected against loss, and the banks themselves would be the only sufferers by the arrangement. If they are willing to retain ‘their circulations at this cost, the most radical (reenbacker could hardly find it in bis heart to deny them the privilege. ~— eee As long as the workingmen of New York city feei that they must have a political party or Banization exclusively their own, they could hot have found name to head their ticket more acceptable in every respect and to all classes than thatof Heary George. The vote Yesterday on his nomination for mayor was Significant, and of good omen. If another great labor movement in local polities Is to sweep through the country like that of 1877-78 it is Well that its beginuings shouid be so entirely ereditabie. $2 ‘The fate of the mayor of Philadelphia will be S warning to future magistrates to bea trifle jess “danuy* and a litte more careful about their bauk accounts, ——————— Lieut. Henn still prefers English to American Yachts. Thatshows that bis patriotism Is of the good old sort, and stands the worst strains that ean be put upon it, The Lee family seems to have got there again. Pree cere ree rondo hier aho ant Bors Bors Bovs ‘We are still barping on the Boys. We are still lothing the Boys. The itoys are our best friends and patrons, and we are striving every day and in every Possible way to convince the Boys and their guardians that their interests are constantly watched over by he —_ ‘The large and constantiy increasing business we are doing in Boys and Children's Clothing proves to us that our efforts are appreciated. We don’t say it boastingty, but we can and do say tt truth- fally, that our stock of Buys and Children’s Clothing ts larger and more carefully selected, our styles are nobbier and our prices much lower than those of any house in the District. This is a sweeping claim to make, but we are willing to stand or fall on {ts truth on faisity. You shall be tie judge. Poor fitting corsets are no doubt injurious to the wearer. It is equally true that perfect-fitting corsets are both helpful and indispensible. The people did without shoes until shoes were made. It would come hard to leave them offnow. Our Lady Manager knows the merits and de- merits of neatly every corset mare; In fuct, has made this branch a study, and has lad a line ‘made to our special order in three different Jengths, equally proportioned, and we ciaim it tobe nearer perfection than any of the thou- sands of so-called “pertect-fitting” and “Glove- ‘Aitting” corsets now in the market. ‘The steadily Increasing sale of the “I. ©."
