a, = if y ai PP —— THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D.C THURSDAY. SEPTEMBER 16. 1886. THE EVENING STAR wa SHIN Gt om, THURSDAY. September ee ‘The Evening star has a regular, permanent Boma fide daily circulation more than treble that of any other daily paper pub- Mshed in Washington, and equal to that of ll the other daily papers here added together. =—— Although the Labor problem seems still a long way from solution, such a report as that of Labor Commissioner Wright for the current Year must contribute a good deal toward its means of settlement. If it does nothing more, {tat least discloses the dimensions of the sub- Jeet by grouping impartially the opinions of men who, from the inside or the outside, have made a special study of it, and assigned causes and proposed remedies for the periodic eras of industrial depression. These suggestions are so abundant as to cover several octavo pages, in small print, with their barest statement by title. Their number shows the ambitious econ- omist to what a huge task he has addressed himself when he sits down to clear away the Tubbish of the problem with one sweep of his pen. In view, moreover, of the fact that under- Beath each of the conclusions of different rea- ‘soners there probably lies a kernel of truth, it is ‘evident that the conditions precedent to an era Of depression are extremely complex, however Simple may be the final cause. Commissioner ‘Wright leans to the beliet that co-operation, in some form, offers the best safeguard against the inequalities ip production, consumption and the distribution of profits which seem to lie at the bottom of most of the materjal troubles trom which society suffers in these Inter days; ‘and In this judgment he has the support of the foremost practical thinkers of our generation. — $$ Perhaps it would save trouble for the admin- istration to send a “special envoy” to San Fran- cisco to report upon the way the custom house 4s managed there. Complaints, which run ail the way from the detention {n the harbor of a foreign minister and ils suite down to indigni- es suffered by female immigrantsat the hands ot male inspectors, deserve something more than passing notice. Either the Chinese who Jand at San Francisco are grumbling people who deserve to have their follies exposed, or else the customs officers at that port have very Jose ideas as to their duty. Whichever may top ought to be put to the pres- things. The public are getting Pretty tired of it. eS A colored laborer who claims to be the only living man with a right matrimonial to the ‘woman figuring before the publle as the wife of Anarchist Parsons, has turned up in Waco, Texas, He did ull he could, he says, wo make something of her, encouraging her to read and study and prepare herself for a higher plane of activity; but her attraction toward Parsons was so strong that she preferred being iis mistress to being an honest workingman’s wife. The social philosopher who refuses to believe that there is such a thing as good luck, bad better go to Waco and muke the acquaintance of the husband, “Mrs. Parsons” relieved of her com- pany. ‘The design on the new oleomargarine stamp, Tepresenting a bull treading on a serpent, Las already calied forth some angry criticism, Deeause It seems to cast a reflection upon the eharacter of the manutactured article. This is supersensitiveness. If anybody has a right to compiain, it 1s the dairyman. The wisdom Of the serpent is proverbial; the bull has given his name to the most aggressive of blunders. Besides—the fact should be mentioned for the Benefit of those advocates of oleomargarine Whose knowledge of general husbandry is Umited—we don’t get butter from bulls. ———— They have found a land snake in Massachu, setts which can give odds to any sea serpent yet invented In that region. It measures forty-five feet in length, its circumferenco is that of a barrel, and it makes a nightly feast on the farmers’ calves and sheep. Massachusetts Seems to want the earth. She has the hardest Slugger and the fastest sloop, and now claims the biggest snake. ———— a Itwas the absence of one of the heirs which prevented the probate of the will ot Samuel J. ‘Tilden yesterday. It may be the presence of too many of them which will interfere with the Proceedings at a later stage. ‘The President still pursues the evasive buck. As Eanrnovaxe Prepicren.
