Claims that a Railroad Official Gave Him $1,000 to Do It. Sr. Louis, Sept, 14.—A special from Coving- ton, Tipton county, Tenn,, states that Sheriff Carter, of that county, basin jail there aman who supposed to be_ the assassin of the late ex-mayor Bowman, of EastSt, Louis. The man was arrested about two weeks ago at Covington for some trivial misdemeanor, and was filoed and imprisoned. While locked up, it 1s alleged that he comm talking about @ terrible murder he com- mitted in East St, Louis, Sherift Carter concluded to investigate. As near as the result of the sheriff's efforts could be ascertained it appears that the prisoner confessed that he was the man who fired the shot that killed Mr. Bowman, He gives details as to how he com- mitted the crime, and why it was done. He says that he was employed by a vice president of a railway company in East St. Louis to. put Mr. Bowman out of the way.
