Se THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON THE EVENING STAR WASHINGTO WEDNESDAY ‘The Evening Star has a regular, permanent bona fide daily circu ‘The New York Star publishes an instructive table showing the condition of the different industrial occupations and trades in that city at the present time. Nearly one hundred and ‘Sfty trades are included in thelist, which gives the hours of labor, the rate of wages, the num- ber of laborers out on strikes, and the general State of trade. The showing, on the whole, is decidedly encouraging. It appears that in most cases the workers have reasonable lengths Of service, the average being between nine and ten hours, with fair wazes, and that in nearly avery instance the trade 1s reported as “good,”” “fair” or “brisk.” Only five trades in the whole list are classed as “dull.” Among these are the sbirt-makers, shoemakers and tailors, Whose dull season this naturally is, The only trades that can complain of long hours are the bakers, barbers, beer wagon rivers, horse car drivers and conductors, shoe salesmen, waiters and tea and grocery clerks. ‘The wages vary from five dollars a week, paid to jute workers, shirt-makers and silk weavers, to four dollars a day, whieh stonecatters, brick- layers, carvers, cement masons, encaustic tile- layers, fresco painters, paper-hangers, plaster- rs and coopers receive. Fully half of the dif ferent classes of laborers are paid at a rate ex- ceeding two dollars 2 day, and in not more than twenty out of the one hundred and fifty ‘trades is the daily wage less than a dollar and a@balf. At present there is a strike in only one | In that trade eight | trade—the cigar maker thousand arenow “out.” These facts and flg- ures tend to confirm the prevailing expectation in regard toa period of increased prosperity in busines circies in the tiate future. $$$ <—___ Unpleasant stories are beginning to come from the Pacific coast of exactions and petty swindles practiced en route by or with the con- nivauce or knowledge of railway officials, in connection with the excursion parties visiting San Francisco to attend the Grand Army re- union lately held there. On occasions of that kind, with vast crowds traveling where accom- modations cannot well be increased indef- nitely, discomforts are unavoidable, and com- plaints, more or less indignant, are to be ex- pected; but In some instances cited in the ex- perience of these excursionists it would seem that the busis of complaint has passed from the domain of the unavoidable to that of the pre- meditated aud systematic. Much indignation exists among those who feel aggrieved, and it is jutimated by them that some very discreditable exposures will follow. The New York court reports are “mighty Interesting reading” now-a-days. It looks as if that elty were about to 1 In a second | Tevised edition of the Tweed revelations. Boss Flynn is not as big a man, and probably pot as | big a rascal, us Boss Tweed, the tlrst of his illus- | trious line; but Squire’s confession and the con- comitant testimony make it evident that the New York municipal government has been drifting into a very bad way of late, and | apparently the only remedy will be by the | Process popularly known as “cleaning the Au- | ¢ news: paper with deliberately misstating a fuet to its editor! 3iy! The New Yorkers are disposed to be happy over the appointinent ot Collector Magone, not- withstanding he is coniessedly guilty of the appalling crime and misdemeanor of not being a “city mau.” After their recent experience with Sharp, Jaehne, Thompson, Hedden, Squire, Fiyna, and other eminent “city men, one would think they would welcome a few Fecruits irom the rural districts, —$_$<——-———____ Mr. Blaine did not materialize at Portland yesterday, as Le was expected to do, ard his campaign was therefore opened with a thrill | Ang burst of mosteloquent silence. Perhaps he | @id not kuow exactly what to say about Mr. Bayard’s vimble theft of his tauader. Ex-Kepresentative Keifer has at last taken the hint that his services in Congress are not desired by the people of his old district, and has withdrawn as a candidate before the nomi- Rating convention. He ought to have kept on the track, Just to realize the esteem in which he is heid. ee Could not Geronimo and Cutting be induced to go over Niazara falls ina barrel together?
