Correspondence of THE EVENING STAR. JACKSON Grove, August 9. Saturday was a quiet day in camp, particu- larly in the afternoon, but towards night a large number of arrivals enlivened the en- mpment. Among those arriving were Rev. T. H. Lewis, of Western Maryland college, and Rev. T. E., Coulburn, of Lynehburg, Va. The sermon Saturday evening was by Rev. Dr. Ewell. The arrivals Saturday night were somewhat larger than were expected, and in some of the tents considerable planning was required before all were disposed of. One of ¢ Union tents, it fs stated, sheltered no less than twenty-three ladies and children, and was dubbed the bee hive. Yesterday the’ weather all that could be wished, and those who expected visitors from the city and coun’ ere not disappointed. A Serious Shooting Case. A_BOOTBLACK SHOT IN THE HEAD BY A STOVE POLISHEK—THE WOUND MAY RESULT FATALLY. Between 1 and 2 o'clock yesterday morning & shooting uffray occurred on F street, between 2d and 3d streets southwest, between a party of colored men, during which “Bob” Davis, a bootblack, was shot behind the right ear by James Seany, a stove polisher, and seriously wounded. There has been bad feeling between the men over a shooting affair which’ occurred about LWo years ayo, since which tine several conflicts between them have taken place. Yes- terday morning Davis, with several other men, who were under the influence of liquor, met Seany in the neighborhood mentioued’ and Started a fight. Some one in the crowd struck Seany witu a slat from a tree box while others pounded him with their fists. Seany was crowded so close by the men who were beating him that he drew his pistol and fired, the shot taking effect in Davis’ head. _Atter the shoot- ing the injured man was taken by bis irlends to Dr. Holden's residence, ou 6th street, and the doctor instructed them to take him around the corner to the station house, where he would attend him in afew minutes.” Davis refused to be taken to the station house and the men car- ried him to his home in Limerick alley, where he was found three hours afterwards by officer Lightborn. From the Philadelphia Times. “I want to show you a new and womder living thing that arrived at the garden on Fri- day,” said Head Keeper Byrne, as he led the way to the snake house yesterday. The new arrival is about as horrible and yet as dandified @ looking fellow as can be found on the banks of the Schuylkill. He is ina glass case. It is the iguana, a species of the tizard family, and was forwarded to the garden by the conimis- siouers of fisheries of Massachusetts, with the Fequest that when he dies his body shall be sent to the Smithsonian Institution at Wash- ington. His body is a drab color, mixed with bluck streaks, His neck and head’ are erect; he has a long tail like an alligator, and four paws Which spread out flat upon’ the sand in his warm cage just like alizard’s feet. Stickin; out from the center of his back, from the hea all the way down towards the tail, is a row of black bristles, which stand erect ‘and do not ook as it they would make a person comforta- ble who would have the temerity to sit down upon them. Its eyes ure intensely black and suappy, and from around the mouth there hang curious pleces of skin looking like plated armor. When the iguana is stretched out he will probably measure five feet in length, There is a pool of water in the cage, and he Occasionally takes a bath. ee ONE oF BUFFALO BILL's INDIANS INSANE.— All the Indians with Buffalo Bill's Wild West, on Staten Isiand, were aroused at 3 a, m. oné last week by one Shawopee, a Sioux In- dian, who told them that the cowboys intended toshoot them. It was with some dilficalty that Mr. Cody dissipated their fears. Lon Wolf, known us the medicine man, declare that Shawopee had had the nightmare. It was decided to send the Indian back to the Sioux reservation at Standing Kock agency, Dakota, as it was found that he was suffering from int sanity.
