5 ed a THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D.C a — i ye —*. THE I EVENING ST: AR. MONDAY ~ ing Star has » regular, perma: Dona fide datiy circulation more than treble that of any other daily paper pab- Jished in Washington, and equal te that of other daily papers here added The death of Franz Liszt removes from earth the last of the original musical romanticists. The romantic school of music covers and in- eludes by far the most brilliant period in the Bistory of the art, and the most illustrious names in the long roll of musical celebri- ties. Beethoven was its prophet, Weber its founder and Schubert, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Wagner and Berlioz its chief leaders. All are gone now, but the impress of their gentus will last forever. Liszt, though Probably the least original of the group In Polnt of creative ability, was undoubtedly the Sreatest of them all asap executant and inter. Preter, and was also a most remarkable man Personally. ‘Yo one could stand in his presence Without feeliig awe-stricken, as if he were of a superior order of beings. His career was an un- broken succession of personal and artistic tri- ‘ww pbs, sufficient in number and brilliancy to turn the head of any man. He met kings and queens on an equal footing, and made the Proudest aristocrats of Austria and France Quail beneath bis sarcasm or quiver with pleas Ure under the irresistible tore of his wondertul Musical execution aud magnetism. He had been decorated sixty times by the sovereigns of Europe. Wherever he went the doors of cities and palaces flew open for him. Men bowed down before him, and the fairest women of Europe worshipped him. He was fick, healthy, tamous and apparently happy. But his life, after all, was not a success, accord- ing to the best standards. Even in his specialty ef music he iailed of the highest, and will not be classed by posterity among the great com- posers. And in a moral and spiritial sense he cannot be recommended as an example for young artists. He was kindly and generous, but wholly self-centered, and intolerably vain. ‘He lacked sincerity, without which no one can be really good or great. His moral principle | was defective. He is supposed to have had more love affairs of an irregular sort than any other man of this century. Selfindulgence, and not self-denial, was h's rule of action; and that is why be came short of true greatness. a oa ‘The overwhelming vote in favor of Mr. Pay- on’s bill against allen landlordism in our ter- Titories, in the House last Saturday, was one ot ‘the most significant and gratifying features of the session. Only six members voted against ‘the measure, which 1s precisely adapted to meet ‘avery urgent necessity, and which ought by all Means to be passed by the Senate before ad- Journment. Mr. Payson has done the state much service in his time, but never bas he Worked more efficiently than during this ses- sion. His efforts in behalf of the integrity of the public domain are marked by intelligence as well as patriotism, and are clearly in the Une of the interests of the people. The entire House committee on public lands, indeed, de- serve much praise for their faithtul and indus- trious work this year. —————— Now that Mr. Maithews has been definitely Fejected by the Senate, it is to be hoped that the President, in selecting a second nominee for the recordership of deeds, may be able to find some resident of the District who seems to Bim worthy of the position. Mr. Matthews’ Bon-residence was the strongest argument against his confirmation, and it is probable ‘that any competent and reliable Washington citizen, of whatever color, would be aeceptable to the people and the Senate. Congress will probabiy adjourn on Wednesday or Thursday, if Mr. Randall and the President ‘will kindly give their consent. It is a fact that these two men hold the question of adjourn- ment in thelr hands, practically, this year. Mr. Randall is said to be yielding at last in his obstinate stand against the Senate on the sundry civil appropriation bill; and now It re- mains to be seen whether the President has ‘Snything more to offer in the shape of a veto. —<$<$<— ‘What is most needed just now along the ‘Mexican frontier of Texas is @ couple of car Joads of good-sized well-made paim leaf fans. ‘There is danger that the war perspiration now ovsing from every pore down there may strike im and bring on blood poisoning. $< If it turns out, as stated by responsible Canadian officials, that there is no truth in the Rarrowing account of wholesale starvation in Labrador, it will take rank among the most ruel and impudent hoaxes of modern times. a A hopeful indication touching the condition Ofex-President Arthur comes in the statement of “Eli Perkins,” writing trom New London, ‘That he is a mental and physical wreck. Eli's ‘weakness is well known. a At last the public and Mr. Ross Raymond, the newspaper dead-beat, are asone. He says Ihe doesn’t care what becomes of him now. ‘Neither does the public. “Why not have clean street cars?” plain- tively asks the New York World. Well, princl- pally because there’s no money for the com- pany in having them clean. Prsservisa Jans Prsszrvixe JARS, ‘Just Received.
