It had been published in the local papers for several weeks that prominent democrats from Washington were to attend, Among the public men present were Gen, Black, Pension Commissioner; Senator Black: burn ‘and a number of ladies’ and gentlemen who accompanied them. “Gen, Biack delivered an appropriate address. The closing speec! was delivered by Senator ‘Binckbirn? He stated that he and Gen. Black had come he: together at the invitation of friends, and that apprehending he would be called upon to de- liver an address, he had written one that be thought would suit. He and the general had a Joint satchel, which they used together. Into this satchel ‘the speaker sald he the mauuscript of the address he expected to de- liyer, but somehow the manuseript had got out Of the satchel and into the pocket of Gen. Black, who delivered it, and did it so well that he had no complaint 19 make. In the evening the party were driven to York to the home of Lieut. Gov. C. F. Black, where they remained over night, returning to Washington in the morn- ing. K ————eo____ Packed in Ice alive. FORTUNATE RESCUE OF A SUPPOSED CORPSE FROM BEING FROZEN TO DEATH. A telegram trom Reading, Mich.,July 6, saya: ‘Mrs. Lucinda Faste, of Woodbridge township, while on her way to the Fourth of July celebra- tion here last Saturdoy fell unconscious from. herseat in the eurriage and was to all indica- tions dead, Medical assistance was called, but all efforts to restore her proved futile and she was given up, although not having every ap- pearance of being dead. The body was laid out and taken back home for burial, Arriving there, ice was procured in which to pack the re- mains, and they were 80 packed for more than thirty’ minutes when an old physician, Dr. Neclich, called on the bereaved family. He was so struck with the life-like "look ot the “corpse” that he expressed doubis of her death. ‘The body was’ quickly from the ice and the doctor went Lo work to establish the fact of her living. He opened a veln in Mrs. Faste’s arm this morning and the blood flowed freely. In @ short time the lungs vegan to work, and the funeral prepa- rations were abandoned. ‘The patient now lies apparently asleep. Her house is filled with curious neighbors and the iocai physicians are much puzzied over the case. Ivis said by the neighbors that Mrs, Faste’s mother once bad a similar experience; that she lay in a trance for many days, and when she came to evinced a iuli knowledge of everything which had gone on around her. oo—_____ Father—No, sir; it shan't be said of me that I wanted to get my gals spliced 5) bud that I had | too out and iasso’em and bring the young men in, One of the girls—No, sather! ANALYZING THE BAKING POWDER “ROYAL” THE ONLY ABSOLUTELY PURE BAKING POWDER MADE.—ACTION OF THE NEW YORK STATE BOARD OF HEALTH. Under the direction of the New York State Board of Health, eighty-four different kinds of baking powders, embracing all the brands that could be found for sale in the State, were submitted to examination and analysis by Prot. C. F. CHANDLER, a Member of the State Board and President of the New York City Board of Health, assisted by Prof, Epwarp G. Love, the well-known late United States Government chemist. The official report shows that @ large number of the powders examined ‘Were found to contain alum or lime; many of them to such an extent as to Tender them seriously objectionable for use in the preparation of human food. Alum was found in twenty-nine samples, This drug is employed in baking Powders to cheapen their cost, The presence of lime is attributed to the impure cream of tartar of commerce used in thelr manufacture, Such cream of tartar was also analyzed and found to contain lime and other impurities, in some samples to the extent of 98 per cent of their entire weight. All the baking powders of the market, with the single exception of “Royal” {not including the alum and phosphate powders, which were long since dis- carded as unsafe or inefficient by prudent housekeepers) are made from the impure cream of tartar of commerce, and consequently contain lime to a con Tesponding extent, The only baking powder yet found by chemical analysis to be entirely free from lime and absolutely pure is the “Royal.” This perfect purity results trom the exclusive use of cream of tartar specially refined and prepared by patent Processes, which totally remove the tartrate of lime and other impurities, The cost of this chemically pufe cream of tartar 1s much greater than any other, ‘and on account of this greater cost is used in no baking powder but the “Royal.” Prof. Lovg, who made the analyses of baking powders for the New York State Board of Health, as well as for the Government, says of the purity and wholesomeness of “Royal” “I have tested a package of ‘Royal Baking Powder’ which I purchased in the open market, and find it composed of pure and wholesome ingredients, It is a cream of tartar powder of a high degree of merit, and does not contain either alum or phosphates or any injurious substances, “E.
