Before Major Dye took charge the vacant houses were promptly stripped. I, with many others, was a sufferer. With the major I have none but a transient acquaintance, but the grumbling about him has called to my recollection that beiore his advent my own house and the houses of six near neighbors were entered by burglars and the more timid went to. the expense of burglar alarms. Since his advent we have slept undisturbed. Any old citizen will remem- ber how the streets were formerly iniested by beggars, ‘These have disappeared. EARS AND SCALP COVERED WITH SCABS AND SORES, CURED BY CUTICURA, ‘My little son, aged eixht years, has been afflicted with Eczema of the scalp, and at timesa great por- tion of the body, ever since he was two years old. It began in his ears, and extended to his scalp. which be- came covered with scabs and sores, and from which a sticky fluid poured out, causing intense itching and distress, and leaving his hair matted and lifeless. Un- derneath these scabs the skin was raw, like a piece of beefsteak, Gradually the hair came out and was de- stroyed, until but a.smail patch was leit at the back of the head. My friends in Peabody know how my litule boy has suffered. At night he would scratch his head until his pillow was covered with blood. I used to tie his hands behind bim, and in many ways tried to pre vent his scratching; but it was no use, he would. scratch. I took h:m to the hospital and to the best Physicians in Peabody without success, About this time some friends, who had been cured by the CurI- Una Resmxpres, prevailed upon me to try them, I began to use them on the 15th of January last. In 7 months every particle of the disease was removed. Not a spot or scab remains on bis scalp to tell the story of his suffering. His hair has returned, and is thick and strong, aud his scalp as sweet and clean ag any child's in the world. I cannot say enough to ex- press my gratitude for this wonderful cire by the CuriccRa Remepres and wish all similarly afflicted to know that my statement is true and without exag- geration. Shee D. C.. WEDNESDAY - A SCIENTI FIG FACT. “Royal,” the Only Baking Powder Free From Lime and Abso lutely Pure. ‘Lite is the serious defect found in most of the cream of tartar baking powders, As @ matter of fact, chemical analysis has found it in all such powders except the “Royal.” Its presence is caused by the use of adultered cream of tartar in the effort to reduce their cost of production. Lime adds to the weight, while it detracts from the ‘strength of the baking powder. It also renders the food less wholesome, giving rise to dyspepsia and kin- dred ailments, Baking powders containing lime produce less leavening gas, and ‘therefore in use are more expensive than a first-class, pure article, ‘The Royal Baking Powder is made from cream of tartar that is first specially refined and made chemically pure. No tartrate of lime or other impurity can find its way into the “ Royal,” and to this fact * someness and keeping quality is due, its great superiority in strength, whole- All this adds greatly to the cost of manufacturing the Royal Baking Powder, but as all its ingredients are selected and prepared with the same precise care and regardless of labor or expense, an article is produced that is free from every extra- neous substance— absolutely pure,” Nor does it contain any ingredients except those necessary to make a pure, wholesome and perfect baking powder. Prof’ McMurtrie, late chemist in chie! to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, after apalyzing the cream of tartat used by the various baking powders of the market, testifies to the absolute purity of thatemployed in the Royal Baking Pow- der as follows: “T haveexamined the cream of tartar " Baking Powder Company in their baking ‘nd free from lime in dny form.” manufactured for and used by the Royal powder, and find It to be perfectly pure Prot. Love, who made the analyses of baking powders for the N. Y. State Board of Health, as well as for the Government, certifies to the purity and wholesome- ness of the Royal. Dr. E. H. Bartley, chemist of the Brooklyn, N. ¥., Department of Health, says: “I have recently analyzed samples of the Royal Baking Powder purchased by my- self in the stores of this city, and find it free from lime in any form.” Bread, cake, biscuits, &c., prepared with Royal Baking Powder, will be lighter, sweeter and more wholesome than it made with any other baking powder or leavening agent. at CITY ITEMS. Oliver Wendell Holmes, in “The Autocrat of the Breakfast Tavie,” says that once he par— took at night of about a quarter section of mince pie. He got the dyspepsia, got out of sorts generally, and preached a series ot most gloomy sermons. When his system had re- Sovered its Lone he took all those sermons, tied them in @ bunale, labelled them Pie Crust, and put them away in a pigeonhole. ‘Tne moral of Unis is obvious: that dyspepsia, indigestion and Jack of tone in the system affect not only bodily, but mental heuitu, When the nerves ure out of gear they must be braced up tor fature work, If 3 man would have the “mens guna in corpore sano.” For this purpose noth- ing equals Dr. Henley’s Celery, Beet and Iron, A nan who tses this will alway’shave his men- tal muchinery in ranning order, because iis bodily machinery is also in good condition, There 1s none of the pie, crust theology about eitner ingredient; nor is there any secret about: it.
