At 7 o'clock last evening Special Officer Austin took tothe Ast precinct a dead infant, which was found on the corner of Sth and D streets southwest. The coroner gave “still-birth” certifleates in both eases. ‘The heat from a defective flue caused a win- dow frame in the hali at the corner of 6th and C streets, occupied by the Salvation Army, to break out into flames last evening. Elizabeth Moore, colored, was fined $10 or 30 days by Judge Snell to-day for indecent ex- posure. —— ‘The Local Labor Troubles. ‘THE LOCKOUT PROBABLY ENDED IN MOST ALL TRADES. There was some excitement among the mem- hers of the Stonecutters’ union to-day, not on secount of any differences between the men and the employers, but on account of efforts of mployers to get back their old men who have gone to work for other persons. Workingmen Ww-day looked upon the long locxout as_pract- cally ended. The plumbers are’ the only ones now “locked out” to avy extent. They still hold out for eight hours and expect to win. The plasterers insist upon eight hours, but most of the men are at work either foreight-hour bosses or for themselves. A simnilar state of affairs is reported as to the tiuners. Painters are going ‘to work for nine hours. THE CHARGE AGAINST PRINCIPAL CLARKE DISMISSED, This morning in the Police Court the case of Charles 8. Clarke, principal of the Gales school building, charged with assaulting Richard Fitz- gerald, who attends school in the building, was called for trial and bis counsel, Mr. C. C. Cole, entered a plea of not guilty. Fitzgerald testi- fied that some boys were throwing wepedoes 15 the school and his teacher, Miss Smith, accused him of doing it, and wanted to search him, Which he refused to let her do, and she sent for Mr. Ciarke, the principal, who took witness ihis eck aud'dragged him through. the room, is neck an mt choking hin, but found uo torpedoes ou hin, Other boys gave sinilar testimony. The de- fendant testified that he was called to the school room because three boys had refused to show the contents of their pockets, the complainant being the largest buy and the leader. The judge said the testimony was confiteting, If he believed the defendant put his foot on the boy's neck he would be inclined to punish him. Ifthe boys were throwing torpedoes on. the floor and they refused to be searched the teacher had a right to reasonably enforce the discipline. In view of the testimony he would dismiss the case. _—__»—___ THIEVES SENTENCED.—Several days Gen. Rosecrans missed from his room in Willlad’s hotel a valuable silk umreblla. The elevator boy, Stanley Adams, was arrested and the umprella rescovered from his house. This morning in the Police Cou: Adams was sentenced to six months in William Mack, colored, pleaded guilty to st ing a tive cent loaf of bread, and was given two months in jail. The nearing tn the case of William Locke, the boy charged with stealing $27 from the house of Mrs. J. H. Honebreaker on Bast Capitol street, was concluded, to-day and damaging testimony against him was given by two boys. ‘The judge sentenced him to sixty day in jail and sixty days in default of Testitution.
