The division on the second reading of the Rome rule Dill in the house of commons last Bight resulted in the defeat of the measure by 2 vote of $41 to 311, a majority of 30 against, ‘Tue division was attended by tremendous ex- €itement. When it became known that the government was defeated the couservatives, Jed by Lord Randolph Churchill, cheered lusti- ly. Then the Purneliites called for cheers for the “grand oi man,” which were given with true Irish vigor, followed by groans for Cham- Derlain and cries of “traitor” aud “Judas Isca- ” ish members twice challenged the Bete. Whee order was restored ‘Mr. Ginistone Tose, white and trembling, and moved to ad- Journ until Thurs his motion was car- Hed. it ts undersiood the cabinet will be Suinmoned to meet at noon to-day to decide Upon the question of dissolution. Utmost capac Mr. Gladstone, replylog to a question, said the government was Liable lo proinise to ‘incorpo fato measures for home rule government in England, Wales and Scotland in the revised Trish Lome rule bill when it was brought in during the autumn sessions in the event of its passing the second read: M ‘Goechen, im resuming the debate on the home rule bill, seid that if the bill passed a tre- mendous struggie woutd be inaugurated by the Catholic clergy of ireland for the control of edu- éation in that country. Regarding the question whether the vill vould prove a final settlement of the Irisit difficalty of lead to eveatual sepa- ration, Mr. Goschen said he did not think it ‘would prove a finality. It bas been shown that the British parliament was not inclined to con- sider Mr. Paruell its dictator. “During the re- cess,” said Mr. Goschen, “I heard ou ister of the crown—say he was certain that Mr. Parnell would be dictator in the coming session. I tunk, however, that Mr. Parnell’s foliowers Will now acknowledge that there are limits cwhereat they see many who are prepared to grant some iegislative autonomy to Ireland would draw the line.” Mr. Gosehen said it ‘would be impossible to include Ulster in a Dub- Up parliament. From the Baltimore (Md.) Morning Herald. The Duffy Malt Whiskey Company, of this city, have rather a summary way of dealing with imitators and infringers on their rights. It has only been six months ago since they had arrested and put under $20,000 bail one of the largest wholesale druggists of New York state, on the charge of re-filling their bottles, a full account of which appeared in the daily papers. ‘Their latest move was the arrest_@ few days ago of Matthew & J. 8, Perrine, of Philadelphi: on two separate charges; one of conspiracy ani the other of attempt to’ cheat and defraud, by putting upa whiskey in a package in imita- Yon ofthat used by the Dully’ Malt Whiskey Company, for their Duily’s Pure Malt Whiskey. The Perrines are an old established liquor bouse, reputed to be worth $200,000. As will be seen by this the Duffy people’ have to con- tend with an entirely different class of imita- tors, from (hose by whom mast mani rs of proprietary articles, are annoyed. They a equal to the occasion, however, and in- stead of bringing their suits in the Civil Courts for injunctions aad damages, whieh frequently consume from three to five years before they reach a hearing, they bring them in the Crim- inal Courts, thus disposing of them in @ few short mouths. This is a new departure in cases of the kind and thelr suits are being watched with interest throughout the country. “Did it not surprise you?” said a reporter toa representative of the Duffy Company, “that a house of the standing of Perrine & Co., should risk their reputation and business honor by stooping to practices of this kind?” “Were they not content with a fair competiton?” “Not at ull, Why sinee the introduction of our xoods there have sprung up in Philadelphia alone (where we sell from $20,090 to $30,000 a mouth) about fifteen different Malt Whiskies, many of them trying to reap the benellt of our name and prestige, but if you will notice there is not a single one of them that claims to be abie to furnish the publie with an article con- aining no fusil oil, nor can they produce cer- | titicates of aualysis, that what they offer is pure. They can't do it, They simply depend on a similarity In name (avy one can get out a malt whiskey) and a cheap article todivert a portion of our trade. There are Just as many bad and poisonous malt whiskies as there are of apy other whiskies. Now as to competition; there is no such thing so far as our whiskey is concerned. We possess a new and important discovery of eliminating fusil oll, and are just as secure in it and as tree from competition as | an absolute patentee of an invention. So you see nothing remains to them bat to sit still and see their yusiness gradually leave them or re- sort to imitation of our goods and the infringe- | ment of our rights which we are bound to pro- teet at any cost. After all it is an acknowledg- ment of the superiority of our whiskey, @ point which We trust your readers will not lose sight on.” A. Wosvenrvt Discovery.
