Batcheler and Heffner, who were bunting for lost sheep. They found a detached human skull, with @ bullet hole through It. Soon after- ards the remains of the man to whom the skull belonged were found under # pile of pine branches and young trees, which appeared to have been cut for the purpose ot hiding It from view. The news of the discovery spread rap- idly, and was naturally coupled at once with the disappearance ot Philip Haviland, the miller, who was supposed to have been mur- dered hear thatspot last December. The articles of clothing found with the remains and the contents of the pockets were closely examined, and tound not to correspond with what should have been found on the person of Mr. Haviland. A pistol, some cartridges, a shoe and an old boot split down in front’ were found near the body, and none of these things corresponded withthe belongings of Havilaud. It was dis- covered that the bull found in the skull ftted the [pistol as well us the bullet hole in the skull. These facts served to mystlly still fur ther the citizens 1a that neighboriood who de- termined to send to Coroner Condict, who re- sides near the village of Sligo. THE CORONER'S INVESTIGATION, Coronor Condict, accompanied by Mr. Charles Graeves, of Sligo, at once reputred to the scene and @ Jury of Inquest was empanneled, con- sisting of sfessrs. A. C. Flack, foreman, T. E. Cullds, K, H. Perey, Charles Graeves, “Joho Heffner, G. Turner, Wm. Lincoln, George Cubl J. Buker, Alfred Lincoln, Burke Lincoln, an James Clark. Eight withesses, mont of them colored, were heard. It was developed that this case had nothing whatever to do, $0 far as Yet Is known, with the Haviland mystery. It was shown that a larceny vi $45 hud been com- mitted at the house of Alien Bowie, colored, Another young colored man named Arthur Bowie ullas Tolliver was suspected of the larceny because be had "been tnlssing since the fact became Known. The robbery was discov- ered early in April. The pistol ivund on the deceused, the ammunition, and a gold plated watca chain were recognized as having been stolen ut the same time the money Was stolen, The mouey was hidden in the garret story of Allen Bowie's house in an old pine box, and It was probably some time after the theft was committed before it became known. Arthur Tolliver, who was suspected, it appears Was pursued by ‘the owner, and as le Was alter- wards missing, it was taken for granted that he had escaped, and had succeeded in keeping himself away ever since that Ue, ALLEN BOWIE'S SONS ARKESTED, Allen Bowie has a number of sons. One is Clagett Bowie, another Sidney Bowie, another Allen Bowie, Jr, another Larim Bowie, and another who wiil be in custody betore the jury meets again to-day. ‘The theory on which’ the arrests Have been ‘made Is that Tolliver was pursued and suffered at the hands of his pur- Suers und that tbe matter was kepLsecret untll this time. The owuer of the stwien property testitied yesterday that he never recovered bis mouey. The impression made upon the minds of the Jury was that the party Io pursuit of une thief appropriated the property to his own use, and Kept the secret, Coroner Coudict, after hearing all he could yesterday of the contru- dictory testimony, dismissed the Jury until to- day ai three o'clock, when other witnesses are to ve heard. ‘These’ developments have agalu shocked the entire country tor miles around, ‘aud it is freely declared by many thut an effort must be made to rid the community of tbe dangerous element residing there. Coroner Condict thinks this discovery may lead to the unravelling of the Haviland mystery, and declares his purpose to leave nothing undone to that end. ———————_ Transfers of Real Estate.
