Lats alan to Te Sl CLERK VALLANDINGHAM'’S REPLY. He An ers the Strictures on His Con- duct by Ohio Democrats. Special Dispatch to THE EVENINe STAR, Corus, 0., May 28—Cierk Vallandingbam writes a lengthy card in his own defense, and strikes back at the absconding senators, who are endeavoring to place upon his shoulders the responsibility of losing the senate, and all that followed te absence of the democratic membesr. Mr. Vallandingham says,“No man could have cone more for his party in January last than I did On one occasion I undertook to follow a rule of the senate made by the democratic majority at the beginning of the session, and for doing so received condemnation from all parties, My democratic friends were the first to abandon me and the quickest to condemn.” Vallandinghan then goes on tosay that he was not invited to the democratic caucuses held just prior to May 6th, the date fixed for the consideration of the report of the special “non- rtisan” committee, which investigated the incinnati frauds. He regarded this want of confidence in him by the democratic Senators as causeless, He knew nothing of the plans of the senators until they had left the city. When the republican contestants from Hamilton county were sworn io, Vallandigham says he had no choice but to do'as the law directs—Kkeep “an accurate record of the proceedings.” The claim that he should haveentered on the journal the fact that there was no quorum present on that eventful Saturday he pronounces absurd. As fo the stealing of the senate journal, he says he did cay his duty, and what every honoravie man would do when he supplied its place as best he could. Mr. Valiandingham declares that the theft was “a disgrace to the state of Ohio.” In conclusion he emphatically denies thut he made any bargains with the republi- cans. a THE FUTURE OF THE LIBERALS, Gloomy Predictions by Joseph Cowen— Home Rule far from Settlement. Lonpox, May 28,—Mr. Joseph Cowen, radical member of parliament for New Castle-on-Tyne, publishes a letter in the New Castle Chronicle, in which he says: The dissentients, consciously or unconsciously, have said good-bye to the liberal party. The home rule question ts not settled. Years will be spent over this fight. Political animosities will grow and fester, lead- ing to a complete recasting of party lines, The Prospect for the liberals is not hopetul. ‘The Times says: Mr. Gladstone would find tt as difficult to enumerate affairs specially Irish as he contessed it would be in bis original state- Ment with respect to imperial affairs, He tad nothing yesterday to say about Ulster or objec- tions to the financial scheme of the bill, ——— Conselat for Capt.
