THE EVENI NG STAR WASHINGTO WEDNESDAY. May 26, 1886. CROSRY S. NOYES. ‘The Evening star has a regular, permanent daily circulation more than bona fid I the other daily papers here added together. ‘When the mine-owners of the Pacific slope were foreing their silver legislation upon Con- gress, nine years ago, somebody suggested that every member of cither house who insisted that the people of the United States should load their pockets down with eart-wheei dollars should be compelled to take his salary in that coin. The unanimity of the popular response 4m tavor of this proposal was almost startling. ‘The only persons who found fauit with it were the Congressmen concerned. The advocates of honest butter as opposed to artificially flavored grease might properly urge that every Senator and Representative who, by his vote as a lawmaker, favors grease as op- posed to butter, should be required to use the Bogus instead of the real article in his own household. If the manufacturers of imitation butter were compelled to prove thelr faith by their works in such a way, we should soon see the end of the oleomargarine crusade; and It {s Feasonable to suppose that the stomach of the ‘average Congressman is no stronger than that Of the average refiner of soap-fat. After all, though, the question comes down to this: Is Congress prepared to face the country with the record of having protected the iron industry, the glass industry, the woolen indus- try, the cotton industry, the sugar industry, and a host of others at the expense of the far- mer who builds a house to live in, buys clothes to wear or drinks his coffee sweetened, and yet Tefusing to protect that farmer in his turn, in a branch of husbandry which really lies at the bottom of all other branches conducted by men of modest means? ————— The debate in the Senate yesterday, In which Senators Ingalls and Voorhees both grew need- Jessly hot, was not nearly so pertinent to the subject In hand as it would have been to another which Mr. Cockrell suggested at an earlier stage. It Mr. Ingalls believes Commis- sioner Black to be enjoying a pension to which he is not entitled it is bis business as an official guardian of the public funds to introduce a bill Tepealing that pension. That would bring up | for discussion, with a legitimate provocation | and in acaim and judicial temper, the whole | question of General Biack’s status as a pen- sioner, and the circumstances under which his alowance of abundred dollars a month was granted tohim. The tendency to run Con- gressional debates off the main and on to side issues 1s not deserving of encouragement at ‘any tme, and is particularly to be deprecated #0 late in the session as this. ee The statement that Gen. Miles has offered fifty dollars for every Indian or Indian’s head brought into camp, and two thousand dollars for Geronimo or his head, is printed to-day Side by side with astory that Miss Folsom denies her intention to marry the President. Both announcements are interesting, if true. But the report about Gen. Miles come from a quarter somewhat notorious for its achtieve- ments with the long bow in journalism; and as for Miss Folsom, her instructors in good English have probably taught her that she will ever marry any one, though she may confer pride and happiness upon some good man by being married to him. ——————— The Canadian statesmanship whose concep- Yon of an enlightened foreign policy involves the confiscation of friendly vessels which enter Dominion ports to trade with the natives and eave money behind them in exchange for the Jocal products they carry away, does not im- press all our northern neighbors with favor. In New Brunswick, especially, the people are re- Ported as disgusted with the course of their ‘authorities, whose dog-in-the-manger tactics are robbing the poor coast-dwellers of a large part of their iceome. > The President continues his good work of ‘Yetoing private pension bills. If he cannot @efend the treasury entirely against avarice and fraud, he can at least narrow the aperwufe “through which the money is hauled out.
