THE EVENIN WASHINGTO™: THURSDAY... .....May 20. 18: (CROSBY S. NOYES. ‘The Evening Star bona Side daily ciresiation mere than treble thet of amy other daily paper published im Washingzon, and equal to tnat of alt the When David B. Hill gets tired of pubite life himsels, he can make s fortune as prinetpai of ® school for training yeung politicians; for a BShrewder handler of men and measures has, Perhaps, never filled the governor's ebair In New York state, and probably not in any other. He has, by a judicious use of the patronage at bis disposal, accomplished the apparently im- possible task of keeping on friendly terms with both wings of his own party and also ingratiat- ug the republican leaders in dangerous dis- trict, It is popularly supposed that Mr. Fill has his eye upon the presidential nomination in 1888, ‘There is probably no. risk in saying that, if an assurance of this nomination were offered him to-day, he would not throw itaway. But that is not the way in whieh such assurances come. They are not passively accepted, but reached for; and Mr. Hill is not the man to reach for fruit which is two limbs distant while there is some on the bough nearest his hand. The most effective work done in New York state during ‘the last six months has been done in the assem- bly districts. The state Senate elected in 1883 holds over till the end of 1887. Itcontains a republican majority. A new assembly will be elected next autumn. In the early days of the coming year a United States Senator will have to be chosen by the legislature to succeed ‘Warner Miller. If a suificient majority of dem- ccrats can be elected to the assembly to over- ome the republican majority in the other Louse on joint ballot, we suspect that Mr. Hill might be induced without much urging to e: change two yearsin Albany for six in Wash- Angton. With this hint to guide them, perhaps some of the newspapers which have been taking the ‘Bui presidential boom literally in earnest may see it in a new light. Should Mr. Cleveland pro- pose to try for another term, for example, would ot the assistance of the federal administration 4m Mr. Hill’s senatorial struggle be a cheap price topay for his withdrawal trom the list of poss!- dle candidates for national honors in 1888? a Mr. Powderly that he has received no Rotice of the intention of Martin Irons to con- Yest with him the next election for grand mas- Yer workman of the Knights ot Labor. By an- nouneing himself a candidate, Mr. Powderly adds, Irons would virtually defeat himself, as such aa act would be against the rules of the organization, Af this were all he had done to compass his own defeat, Mr. Irons might have cause for self congratulation, Unhappily for his ambition, be laid out his campaign on the theory that ‘the American workingman is by nature a mal- content and by choice a striker. hoped that recent experience has taught bim a Jesson or two, and that he now knows as much More about the American workingman as the American workingman knows about Martin Irons, a Various selfish interests have sofar succeeded “In defeating every measure for @ free bridge | across the Potomac and they seem to have ip- ‘uence in Congress to be uble to head off any Jegislation in that direction for the session.
