MAXWELL ‘The triat of H. M. Brooks, alias Walter H. ‘Lepnox Maxwell, for the horrible murder of Charles Arthur Preller, was begun in earnest in the criminal court in St. Louis yesterday. Af wer the Jury was sworn Mr. C. O. Bishop made ‘the opening for the state, and gave a graphic description of the events which led up to the rime. Maxwell flushed and grew pale in turns while Mr. Bishop was speaking. There were present many ladies, who were given seats in- side the bar. The court was fammed and the adjacent streets filled with people. The only witness examined was Merritt R. Noble, for- merly clerk at the Southern hotel, but now liv- ing in Texarkana, Ark. He identified Max- well’s signature on the hotel register, de- scribed bow he obtained the key to Preiler's room, and told of the finding and identifica- satiun of the inurdered man’s bod: AN ALLEGED CONFESSION. There appeared in a St. Louis afternoon paper the following alleged confession of Maxwell: “Mr. Prelier was suffering from a private dis ease, for which I had previously preseribed, mixing the medicines myselt from the botties in the medicine case I carried with me. But his ailment had reached @ stage when it was necessary for me to make a certain investiga- tion. _I was obilged to use a catheter and in as- ing @ catheter when the parts were inflamed I had previously applied chloroform, in order to produce condition of narcotism. I used ehloro- form in this manner on a man bamed Harrison in Liverpool without any serious result. I ex- plained the process to Mr. Preller and told him what 1 should have to do. He was not only willing, but was very anxious for me to treat him in this manner. ing the day I pur- chased four ounces of chloroform, which was standing ina botile on the edge of my w: stand, where I was washing some surgical in- struments. This washing of instruments took place Sund: d was intended as a preparation for the operation. In washing the jastruments I overturned the bottle of chloro form and it went headlong into the basin, the cork coming out, and ail but aboutan ounce'and quarter or an ounce and a hall going down in ‘This was probably 3 o'clock, and after get- ting my instrument ready I went out tosecure some more chloroform. I went to the drug store. I don’t know where, but the store near the hotei (Fernow’s), and asked for the ebloroform. ‘The clerk suid that I was excited and ina hurry. This was not so. Isat down in a chair in the drug store for more than a quarter of an hour and was altogether very leisurely about ny business, for there was no barry. “If lam not mistaken I had a long conversation with some one in the drug store. When I got the chloroform I repaired to my room. Prelier had been in and out of my room and bis own all the aiternoon. About 5 p.m. we began the operation. I administered ihe ehloroform in the usual way, Lolding a satu. Tuted cloth to the nose. Preller passed through the first stage ull right. One of the largest concerns of this country, which has made its prosperity and fame upon @ common-sense view of the sanitary needs of the people, is The Duffy Malt Whiskey Co., Baltimore, Md., the discoverers of the Duffy’ pure malt whiskey, the only absolutely pure whiskey manufactured, the medicinal virtues of which have proved it to be ina very brief period, not only the most popular, but an un- fuiling’ specific for the worst diseases which afflict mankind.
