Corcoran has resigned asa mem- ber of the Ascension chureh vestry, and al- though he has not taken an active part as member of the vestry for years, yet he has been @ liberal contributor to the ehurch, and he has always been consulted in matters of church in- terest. ‘The vestry have therefore accepted the resignation with regret. Tue reason for this ac- tion on the part of Mr. Corcoran is that he is a friend of Henry Wise Garnett, who at the re- cent election was not re-elected a member of the vestry. Mr. Corcoran wanted Mr. Garnett retained in the vestry and after the election wrote a letter stating that he would resign in order that Mr. Garnett could be selected in his place. ‘This request the active supporters of the church who were consulted felt could not be complied with, and Mr. Corcoran was so in- LOCAL MENTION. ‘The Weather. UP IN THE COURT IN GENERAL TERM TO-DAY. To-day in the Court in General Term, Judges Hagner, Cox and James, the habeas corpus case of the two soldiers, Esinund and MeGurl, was taken up, Messrs. J. W. Walker and W. Pierce Bell for the petitioners and E. M. Watson for the government. ‘The petitioners were tried and acquitted in the Criminal Court on a charge of larceny and receiving stolen goods, andj were subsequently tried by court-martial | and sentenced to the penitentiary.
