THE HORSES. are nearly ‘all quartered on the grounds now and they are in exceptionally good condition. Some of them have alittle too much surplus flesh, as they have not been able, with the cool spring weather, to work down tine enough, but it will not take long to reduce it. ‘The old favorite, Col. Sprague, never looked better in his life’and he canters around the track with an air of confidence that adds to his popularity. Barring accidents, he promises to Tepeat during the summer and fall some of his best performances. Jobn Spellman, who has won laurels enough in the pig skin, and now proposes to win a for- tune, is industHously training Strathespy and St. Paul. Little Higgs also shows up early every morn- ing With his horses and if he does not make tne Duke of Westmoreland do something worth speaking of it will not be for lack of dili- fence and good horse flesh. Mr. Bureb, with is string of clippers, headed by Sprague, is one of the first to turn out, and each horse is worked with the judgment and caution of a veteran trainer, McMahon, besides the horses so well known here, has a’ number of promising colts, and it is pretty safe to predict that he will cap- ture some of the prizes offered for youngsters this season, Ex-Gov. Bowle has a stiing that 18 universally pronounced superior to anything he has turned out tor some years. Costello is training them for telling work. Mr. Loud has not many horses to look after, but he counts what he has among the best. "The track was never in better condition, and unless very heavy rains intervene the fastest time ever made will be recorded at the coming meeting. ————— ‘The Pennsylvania Railroad Company’s New System of Baggage Delivery. On May Ist the Pennsylvania railroad com- pany will inaugurate a new system for the prompt delivery of baggage, to be known as the “Special Delivery System,’ which will supple- ment the present mode of handling baggage, and is designed to relleve passengers of all care and anxiety regarding their baggase in transit, as well as tosecure speedy dispatch and prompt delivery in special cases, where It 1s desired. Arrangements have been perfected with the New York Transfer company in New York, and the Union Transfer company in Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washingion, by which parties can send their baggage in’ advance, if neces- sary, from any locality in one eity to any local- ity in any one of the other cities, obviating the nécessity for any attention on the part of the owner after the order has once been given for such special delivery to the transfer company at starting point. ‘The transfer company. receiving the baggaze will give a receipt therefor, and attach a special check containing the address to which the baz- gage is to be sent by first train after the order Is taken, and arrange for its prompt delivery, on arrival, in the city to which it is forwarded, ‘Thisis a progressive step in the handling of baggage, which cannot fail to attract the atten- | tion and enlist the co-operation of the traveling public. Itrelieves travel of all annoyance in- eldent to the transter of baggage, and {t also en- ables those who desire to have’ their wearing apparel or other personal effects delivered at the end of the journey in advance of thelr own ar- rival, to enjoy this advantage by simply notify- ing the company as to when and where they de- sire it checked and delivered. A business nan in Washington may leave his order at the office ofthe Union Transfer Company in the morn- ing, and when he arrives at his destination in afternoon or evening will find that his baggage has preceded him and is at hand ready tor use. It will also prove an admirable arrangement for ladies traveling alone, and in fact for any one who desires promptness and certainty in the delivery of that which is often a source of annoyance and delay. ‘The charge for this special service will be $1, fifty cents for transfer in each eity, and 1s to bé repaid. Orders may be left at offices of the Qnlon ‘Transter co., comer 13th and Penusylva. nia avenue, in Washington, and the agents of these companies will call for and deliver bag- gage at its final address. he Pennsylvania Railroad Company derives no revenue from this arrangement, as the charge of one dollar, which is only a Slight ad- Vance on present rates for ordinary delivery, simply covers service performed by the transfer companies. In introducing this reform, the company is only following up a line of policy to which it has always adhered of lightening as far as possible the annoyances and anxieties of travel, and of giving its patrons every convenience that can be desired for their comfort. The advantage of this new scheme will be readily appreciated by the thousands of people who travel frequently, and its usefulness and conve- nience will commend It to the consideration of every one. ese ae MARRIAGE LiceNses. — Marriage licenses have been issued by the clerk of the court to Walter R. Williamson and Josephine E. Beach; Ashley Jackson and Annie Randolph; Daniel Desmond and Margaret Carroll; Wm. £. Franke and Lena M. Schnabel; J. Five-day excur- sion tickets will alsobe sold between New York and Wilmington, Del at a rate of $5, This re- duction is not oniy in the line of that policy which seeks to toster the growth of business whenever it shows # tendency towards im- Provement, but. is also @ turther step toward Hsarming ‘the tleket scalpers, who have been dealing in tickets between these important elties. “A stop-over will be allowed on all of these tickets at Philadelphia, also at Baltimore on those issued between New York and Washing- ton, The issue on excursion tickets will not be restricted to New York, but will extend to all the more im) t stations on the Pennsyl- vania system. THE NATIONALS SNOWED UNDER. ‘The Home Nime Badly Beaten by the yee <S= Games Yester- The Philadelphia “‘sluggers” came down upon the Nationals like an avalanche yesterday, and won the game by a score of twelve to three. As on the day previous, they scored three times in the first inning. The Nationals in the same inning made two runs, Baker's clean two bag- ger past third base bringing Carroll and Start home. In the fourth inning the home team tied the game by ad of a three bagger off Knowles’ bat and a sacrifice by Barr. The au- dience became very cheerful at this stage of the game, for it looked as if the Nationals would gather themselves together and repeat their plucky playing of Thursday. But not so. A single by Start was the only hit in addition to Knowles’ three and Baker's two bagger, made during the game, They were at the mercy of Daily's pitching. The visitors on the other hand batted Barr very freely, making fourteen hits. They scored once in ‘the fifth inning, twice in the seventh, three times in the eighth and twice in the ninth. ‘The Nationals seemed to lack confidence from the start, There was an absence of that vim and snap which char acterized their playing in Thursday's game. The; id not make many costly errors, but there was a good deal of loose fielding’ gen- erally on the part of the home team. ey should not place all dependence upon the bai- tery. ‘The best pitchers are badly thumped oc- casionally.
