‘ | THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C.. MONDAY, “ApRtt, 26, 1886—SUPPLEMENT. KNIGHTS OF CAPITAL. the Battle with the Has Been Prepared Fer. 1X. ¥. Special tothe Philaielphia Press, April 26. ‘Just as the troubles between the northernand southern states led, year by year, a number of decades to the struggle of twenty- five years ago, so have the differences between capital and labor been gradually approaching the final struggle. It has been said or late that the strikes all over the country are indictative that the period is at hand when the miliionaire and corporations on one side and the working- men on the other must come to a satisfactory and final understanding, which 1s to be the supremacy of the one or the other. ‘Strikers in a majority of instances have met with success in times past simply because they were organized, but recent information shows that the millionaires and corporations have aiso organized and that to this fact is due the virtual defeat of the Knights of Labor on the Gould southwestern system in Chicago, on the Sd avenue road in this city and of the sugar strikers in Brooklyn. It is learned that from the day last summier when Gould was forced to bow the itnee tothe Knights and grant their demands for an adjustment of grievances on the Wabash system that the capitalists and large corporations, seeing the handwriting on ‘the wall, have been preparing for a flual struggle. Practically speaking, # great union of the moneyed interests bas ‘been in course of forma- tion for many months. At first the suriace Failroad corporations of this city did not be- Jong to the union, and they were foreed to it the demands of their men in January. Since then it can be positively stated that the presidents of the roads have joiued the big union, subseribed anywhere from $1,000,000 and upward and are now prepared’ to give Dattle to the Knights. To this union of capitai more than anything else is due the defeat of the Third avenue strikers, To this big union is due the defeat of the strikers on the southwestern system, the defiant attitude of Hoxie and the surrender of the strikers at Chicago. When Hoxie turned his back upon the members of the general executive committee of the Knights of Labor he knew that all the roads leading into east St. Louis had subscribed $250,000 as « fund to de- feat the strikers. He knew thatall the other Toads of the country had svbscribed or were Willing to subscribe hundreds of thousands to crush the Knights of Labor and the labor unions of the country. ‘The last to come into the union are the sugar Tefiners of Brooklyn. They also have sub- seribed to the big iund and are prepared to fight tothe bitter end. They are even more defiant than Hoxie. They reiuse absolutely to take the strikers back at anything like toriner wages. They wili shut down entirely, they say, knowing full wel! that as the knights have a@iund from whieh to draw support, they also have a fund running up into the millions from ‘whieh to draw sustenance. A certain president of one of the trunk lines said to-day that bis company stood ready to subscribe half a million to the big tund at the first indication of trouble from its employes. Whether Gould is the general master workman of the Knights of Capital can not be learned, but such is the report. This big fund has enabled the corporations to scour the country for non-union men, and itcan be stated posi- tively that in the event of a general tie-up of the railroads in this or any of the large cities these men stand ready to lake the places of the strikers, ages Strikes too Hastily Begun. PROPOSING A REMEDY FOR THE EVIL—KNIGHTS Workmen OF LABOR To LIMIT THE POWER OF DISTRICT ASSEMBLIES. New York Special to the Baltimore Sun, 234. An important declaration was made this afternoon by,a member of the grand executiv. boardof the Knights of Labor, who is second in influence and authority only to Powderly, and his words, therefore, are very significant. He says that a special meeting of the K. of L. has been called to be held at Cleveland, Unio, jaie next month. This meeting has been called to consider especially a proposed amendment of the constitution of the order so as to limit the power if the district assemblies to order strikes, The committeeman says that some of the district assemblies like that presided over by Irons in St. Louis have a wide jurisdiction, aud when they order strikes it becomes a mat ter of national concern. He thinks, thereiore, that when a strike is proposed the district as- sembly shall be obliged to call in members of the grand executive board for advice and direc- Uon before the strike can be ordered. The com- litteeman frankiy states that the grand execu- tive board regards the Third Avenue ratiroad strike in this city as unwise and injurious to the interests of the order, and he does not be- lieve that it will succeed. The southwestern strike was also at the begining ill-advised, and ‘these two strikes will be held up at the Cleve- land meeting of the grand lodge us illustrations Of the fuily of allowing the district assemblies full power to order strikes. ee Maine Republicans and the Tariff. ‘Thecali for the Maine republican state con- vention says: “All electors of Maine who are in favor of maintaining a protective tariff; ‘who will join in resisting the attempt now be- ing made in a democratic House of Representa- Uves to injure many of the leading industrial interests of Maine; who are in favor of elevat- ing and dignitying human labor by securing to the laborer bis Just reward; who demand free- dom of suffrage throughout the republic and ‘an honest counting of the ballots; who uphoid all judicious measures for the encouragement ot rican ship building; who believe in an honest and responsibie civil service and in an economical administration of the government; who approve the prohibition of the liquor traffic and the promotion of the cause of tem- perance, are cordiaily invited, without regard te past political differences, to unite with the Tepublicans in the selection of delegates vo this convention.” —— An Insane Mother's Terrible Deed. AFTEE TAKING POISON, SHE KILLS ONE OF HER CHILDREN AND WOUNDS THREE. Twelve years ago the wife of J. Monroe Smith, a farmer ot Keyport, N. J., became insane, and was sent toan asylum. Inayearshe returned home cured, as was thought Last Friday morning she took rat poison, procured an axe, and entering the bed chamber of her four-year old daughter Edna, who was asleep, she raised the axe, let it descend twice with terrific force on the head of the child and split itopen. She then went to the bed room of Rutus, her tweive- year-old son, and struck him three or four blows On the bead with the blunt edge of the axe, lay- ing the side of his head open. Next she turned | ber attention to her eleven-yearold daughter | Bessie, whom she found on her knees praying, The child seemed to know that her turn had come, as she had witnessed the other tragedies. She iiftea up her hands imploringly, as if to beg for mercy. But this had no effect on the frenzied mother. She brought the axe down op the kneeling ehiid’s Lead with great force, and a moment later her eldest daughter lay on the floor stunned by a biow from the axe. ‘The cries of the children attracted the atten- tion of Bettie Beldo, a cotored servant. she rushed up the stairs and was met by Mrs. ‘Smith, who pursued Ler with the axe. Smith returned to the house from the yard, where he had been working, and as soon as his wile saw him sue dropped ber axe and made no further ‘atiempt to carry on her murderous work, “Fanny,” said ti Kill these children? Without exhibiting any sorrow for her ‘terri- ble deeds she answered him calmly: “Why, Monroe, I was wold by God to doso, | and I obeyed His command” Then she added: {iknow I did wrong, bat it was spe only thing w be done to save them trom hell,” By this Mrs. Smith meant that she was afraid that the old homestead, which has been in the family tor generatious, was to be taken away and that tne children would be thrown upon the sireet and go to the bad. Th cause of most of the trouble upon Mrs. Smith's mind appears to have arisen irom the home: stead being heavily encumbered. It is thought | he cannot recover from the effects of tbe | potson she took. The chiid Edna was killed instantly. The other three ehiidren may die. ee Fine Weat! April. * From the New York Tribune. So much June weather in April as‘we have had this ae unusual, not tosay extra- ordinary. Thrice within a week the mercury in New York has been up to or above 80°, Such an event occurs,on an average, only once in four of five Aprils; although twenty-six in suc cession, beginning with that of 1835, passed withouleven that figure being attained here, according to Dr. Draper's records. The highest April temperature given by that authority be- tween 1822 and 1544 was 54°, this being regis ered in 1522, 1561 aud 1571. ¥. Hudnat’s thermometer stood at 85: same place, however, April 22,4555, the prac- tically unprecedented heighth of "87° ‘was Feached. But for that ineident yesterday's heat would beat the local record’ for this time of year for more than half acentury. The burst Of excessive heat last April was followed by & gold reaction which lasted until the middle of May, That experieuce may not be precisely paralleled this spring, but a long continuance ‘of the present abnorinal weather is hardly to be expected. a Ir Is Sarp that a Japanese mechanic can measure distauces with bis eye. By the aid of the Duffy device, which represents miniature firmament and tabular dial, the time can be ascertained almost to a minute, which Is destined to render it invaluable to mariners, hunters, fishermen and to the masses generally, as after’ littie practice even a child will be able to tell the time at night. ithough the device is quite an expensive one, the proprietors intend distributing it free and in time everybody in the country will have one. They positively refuse, however, to fill any request for same by mail, unless accom- panied by six cents in postagestamps, addressed to their Supply Department, as they are being flooded with applications.” Evex Ir You Bor A Dozex Common porous plasters—which you can get for & song at any of the Cheap John Druggists—you have merely thrown away your mouey, for one Benson's Capcine Plaster is worth them all. ‘The reason is this:—Ben- son's is the only porous plaster in the maket that is honestly and skillfully made and scientifically medl- cated.
