Ss le es eee ae THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C., Recommending Changes in Scheols. President Edward T. Steel, of the board of pudite education, presented his annual report in Philadelphia Tuesday. It recommends that Kindergartens be aaded to the public schools; that manual training be tntroduced in the primary departments; that the salaries of prim. ary school teachers be made the same as those of grammar school teachers, in order to insure equally capable teachers; that the term “sec ondary,” as applied to schools of the fifth, sixth, seventh and eight grades be dropped, thus di- ¥iding the schools into the primary and the grammar. He expressed the belief that with such reforms the board would accomplish more in preparing children for the duties of Aife in the first eight grades than at present by the entire department. a How Many Cats Will Make a Man Crazy. The long trial of issues as to the will of Gus- tavus Nicholson was concluded in Baltimore Tuesday. The eccentric old banker left the bulk of his wealth to one brother, and the con- test was made by the other brothers and their children, who asserted that the banker was not ofsound mind when he made thewill. One of the principal proofs of his insanity, as held by the plaintiffs, was his great love for cats, and his servants festified how he lived in his big house alone with nis cats. The house was an asylum for cats. They slept im the banker's bed. He cried whenever a cat died. Inarguing for the defendant John Handy de- clared that a weighty question for the Jury to consider was just how many cats it takes to make aman crazy. A man may be sane if he has two cats, but inust certainly be crazy if his eat haskittens. ifthe old banker didget down on his hands and feet, face upward, and craw slong the floor he showed great agility, and it was doubtful whether any gentleman on the Jury could have done it, drunk or sober. The ‘case was given to the jury with instructions for a sealed verdict, se jue Fogs and Cholera. A telegram from Cleveland, Ohio, says:—On several mornings during the past week the air im this city has been thick with a bluish fog, issuing from the earth. Its presence is regarded by persons who remember its previous appear- ance here as ominous of an approaching epi- demic of cholera. It is a singular fact, cited by those who went through the cholera plagues of 1866 and earlier years, that this same bluish fog bas always preceded an outbreak of the dreaded scourge, and that it has not been seen in this city until this week since the last cholera epidemic. Scientists bere. whose attention has been called to the fact, believe that conditions favorable to the creation of this fog are favora- Die to the spread of cholera contagion, eens A Tragical Snake Story. For six months a young man named Fergu- son, who resided at Great Falls, Me., bad been in failing health, despite the care of the physi- cians, none of whom could fathom the cause of his decline. Among many odd symptoms ‘was that of a peculiar choking sensation, which was not understood until one day a snake thrust its head out of the young man’s mouth. ‘The sick man called bis sister, and she, wrap- pidga cloth around her hand, when next the i ssing head appeared, seized It, and with a quick pull landed the venomous reptile at her teet. Her action killed her brother. The tail of the snake had grown into the young man’s body, and in tearing it away a blood vessel was brokén and the young man bled to death, eo Darwin's at Last. Darwin’s missing link has been discovered in Laurens county, S.C. The tact that a boy now over twelve years of age still wears dresses has long excited the curlosity of Dorroh communi- ty, in thatcounty. His parents explained this by saying that he was deformed and could not wear ordinary trousers. The boy runs and jumps as well as other children and shows no sign of deformity. The mystery has been solved by @ physician who recently attended him while he had fever. He says that the boys’s backbone is prolon; into a tail about Oy ee inches in length and that itis covered with a thick growth of hair. The tail wags just like a dogs. His parents have attempted to make the boy wear trousers, but whenever the cau- dial appendage is bent to one side it — him, ‘The boy is active and in perfect heal! a A Timely Dream. From the Lewiston (Me. ) Journal. George Moore, the clerk of the Hotel North at Augusta, recently had a@ dream that is worth telling. Andrew Jeck, the veteran railway postal clerk, boards at the hotel, and as he goes out on the early morning train he at night leaves an order to be called at 4:30 a.m., by the Porter. Moore has been accustomed to put down this order at night whether Jeck left it or not. One night Moore dreamed that he had failed to pat down this order. In his vision he Cai ascteob inn, Oo the station just as the train Was going out. le saw him staggering aio with an immense load of mail bags on his sho and with great beds of sweat on his tore- , painfully running after the train on the ‘ack trying Vainly to catch it. Witha jome Moore awoke and asked himself whether he h: failed to put down Jeck’s call. He could not re- member, but hastily slipped into bis clothes and went down stairs to see. The order was not on the book. Strange to say the hands of the clock pointed directly to 4:30. Moore went up and called Jeck himselt on time. a A Woman's Double Life. San Francisco dispatch In St. Louis Republican, The application of Peter Elehebarne, of San Jose, for letters of administration on the estate of Charlotte Parkhurst, in Santa Cruz county, has made public a remarkable story of a ‘woman's dual life. Early in the spring of 1848 the peopie of Sandusky, Ohio, were startled by the discovery that Miss Charlotte Parkhurst, only daughter of Frank Parkhurst, a prominent Sitizen, bad eloped with the town postmaster during the night. The distracted father searched for his Lottie for months without success, and Gnaily concluded she had come to an untimely death. A few years after this the Calliornia gold fever was at its height. Railroads were unknown. Stages were the only means at hand for transporting miners to different points in the gold ftelds, and experienced drivers were in demand. Their perilous exploits with mustang teams were told in cabin and by the camp fire. None of these bold pioneer stage drivers wero Oftener mentioned than was young Charley Parkhurst. To know One-eyed Churley, as he jed from the fact of having lost an eye in with highway men, was to respect and admire bim for bis quiet, courageous character. ‘Tiring of stage driving, Parker sought more congenial pursuits, and was made time statioa agent for t © staze company when couches plied between this city and and Watsonville. At one time he was put in possession of and held a dis- puted tractof land, now valued at $20,000, when the struggle Over the property’ was so bitter that oaly a brave, determined man was believed equal to the task of holding it, After an eventtul career in California Parkhurst was found dead in bed at Watsonville on December 29, 1579. Then the startling tact Was revealed that Charley Parkhurst was a woman. Subse- gaent investigations established beyond doubt the identity of the famous Jehu with Charlotte Parkhurst, the eloping belle of Sandusky. A singular circumstance is that until now, after the lapse of over six years, no effort has been ade, either by public officers or friends of the Weunan, to settle up the estate.
