CITY AND DISTRICT. Raa THE NEWARKS BADLY BEATEN. The Nationals Score = Victory Ov: Their New Jersey Visitors — Other Games Yesterday. ‘The Nationals captured the largest audience of the season yesterday, as well as a game from the famous Newark club, by their sharp fleld- ing and heavy hitting. The score was 13 to 0. ‘The visitors cou:d do but little with Shaw's de- coptive curves, while the home team batted Pyle, of last year’s Virginia ciub, and a good piteher, too, all over the grounds. Two and three baggers were the order of the day. The local con‘ ingent first began the slugging, Baker, Gladmon and Knowles all taking kindly to the pitehing. As one peanut boy remarked to an- other, “They're a doin’ Pyle up. They're on to his "last years carves. " The batter work of Shaw and Gilligan mirable. Shaw made some very pretty Stops, and pitched very effectively. Only one jewark man attempted to steal second on Gil- ligan and he found Knowles waiting for him twelve feet off the base with the ball in his hand. Gilligan is very active and loses no time in throwing the ball, He does not make a sin- Je unnecessary motion. The same clubs pla; Sgain to-day, when the phenomenal Smit will probably’ pitch for the Visitors. Joe Start watched the game yesterday from the grand stand aud was well pleased with the way the Lome team handled themselves, “He certainly picks them up cleverly,” he re- marked, as Knowles took care of one grounder after another. ‘A closer game yesterday would have been More interesting to the general spectator, per- haps, but such # decided victory was a bi thing for the Nationals. An impression ha ne abroad that the Nationals were weak. 'wo defeats by the Metropolitans and two by the Baltimores account for this impression. Lack of practice together account for the de- feats. Either of these clubs would fare badly at the hands of the Nationals to-morrow. ‘The good attendance yesterday shows what may be expected during the season {i thingsare managed properly. If the management could hear the comments of spectators when players are advertised to play and do not appear care would probably be taken hereafter to announce only what is positive. Smith and Trott were announced for the Newark battery yesterday. Neither one played. Joe Start, it was an- nounced, would make his first appearance at first base for the home team. He had no Inten- tion of playing, and will not play until Friday or Saturday. "He handied « ball yesterday morning for the first time this season and very sensibly postponed his appearance in public until he has limbered up a little. Many bets were made yesterday on the sup- ition that Smith and Trott would be the Newark battery and that Start would play with the Nutionals. Other games yesterday re- suited as follows: At St. Louls—Piitsburg, 6; St. Louis, 5. At Memphis—Mucon, 12; Memphis, 1. At Ricbmond—Boston, 14; Rochester, 2. In 1841 Sir Robert Peel, on coming into office alter the memorable election of that year, sent for Mr. Gladstone to offer him office. He went off, saw the great man, and returned home. His wife, then as now the ever-eager sharer of his thoughts, re- ceived bim with the affectionate curiosity "as: ‘ural to the occasion. Mr. Giadstone sat down 00 & sofa, and did not look best pleased. “Well, said Mrs. Giadstone, “what has he offered you” “The worst that could possibly be. He has Offered me the vice presidency of the board of trade. It is not to my taste, and you know wanted the chief secretaryship for Ireland. “Shall you take it?” asked his wife. “Oh yes, said the rising statesman; “I must obey the ehief of the ry, but I am greatly disappoint- ed, and don't look forward with any pleasure toiny work.” Such was Mr.Gladstone's introduc- duet ‘vo the great commercial and fiseal labors: in which he afterward became famous, and developed an altogether unsurpassed genius. In this manner the incident was overruled, as Focple say, for good; but it is remarkable that us early in his career the great man who now leads the liberal party snould have cherished aeaneen oat bre a pr pom on Ireiand, wi the maturity of his powers, he has done and ‘planned so much. = Spark's Mischievous Work. From The St. Paul Pioneer Press. Secretary Lamar completed the extinetion of Commissioner Sparks yesterday by the per- eumptory reversal of his famous order of April ‘ter, sul ‘arter to Mary Mercer 3, 1885, suspending the issue of all land patents within limits which embraced most of the Public lands in progress of settlement. Incal- culable mischief has been done by this gratutt- €us obstruction to the settlement of the public ¢omain, not to speak of the gross injustice and Jasult of placing thousands of honest settlers under a baseless suspicion of fraud. The action Of the Secretary cures that wrong, but it will take many mouths of labor to audit and admit the claims suspended by the order and clear up the Srrears of work in the land department created by this needless stoppage of machinery, As to Sleeves. From the London Truth. Miss Cleveland objects to shoulderstrap sleeves. She always orders genuine sieeves for ber low-waisted dresses. I wonder what she would think of the contrivances of Ja plus belle femme de Paris, Madame Ganthereau, to make believe that she is not sleeveless? This winter the fropt and back quarters of her low-waisted Body were, sometlines held on by a tiny gold ¢ serving the purpose of a shoulder strap, by a string of pearis, by a cord, or by a n: ribbon, Sleevelessniess is, ‘thinks, iss C. thini downright iminodest. In’ the courve of the Eleusinian chat about the awe-inspiring sub. dgcts dealt with in the Cleveland and Cad ntow correspondence, which I was allow: to bear last night, the question whether the square-cut neck was more objectionable than the low body was seriously discussed, and @ Yerdict of “it is” was returned. You see the latter “carries the eye all round, whereas" — but I must not prociaiin what passed at Eleusis on this grave mater. Daffey’s Pure Malt Whiskey. ‘WHAT IT Is. It is a superior brand of pure whiskey, its chief merit being that it is distilled by a secret Process discovered by us in 1860, whereby every trace of fusil ofl and other injurious sub- stances are eliminated. It is the only whiskey ofthe kind manntactured in the world, and it is the only absolutely pure whiskey on the mar- ket. While asa whiskey and for every pur pes? to which a whiskey is put, either as a medicine or drink, it is unequaled by any other whiskey, it is, owing to its absolute purity, es- pecially tied for medicinal pu Another Peculiar feature of it is that it's the only whis- ey that will stay on the stomach of invalids and debilitated ‘persons, and combining as it does a food quality with that of a stimulant, it 4s the only whiskey that ought to be used in the treatment of the sick; and still further tea- ture, that In whatever quantity it Is consumed, there are no after effects from it, such as are experienced from the use of other whiskies con- taining fusil oll and other poisons. It is conse- quently a medicine of established standard, and in order to protect the public and to guar: antee its purity and standard quality, and to Prevent its adulteration or deterforation in any maoner,it is put up and sold only in sealed bottles. “Being a superior brand of pure whiskey, distilled “from the very best materials, it is. of necessity an expen- sive one, and by the demand created for it ‘as such ‘among consumers, dealers are virtually compelled to handie it, although at a profit to them of about one-fourth ot what is usually made on other whiskle such as many of them have the reputation keeping. For this reason we would impress upon ouf friends the importance of demanding ours as the only pure whiskey, and we warn them, in view of the hundreds of analyses this whiskey has received at the hands of the most eminent chemists of this country, and to which we openly submit it at all times, that where any attemptis made by unscrupulous drugzists to palm off an inferior and adulterated whiskey as being as good or pure as ours, they are ac- tuated solely by mercenary motives; and the druggist or dealer who for paltry gain is guilty of such an act, is as culpable as a man who would sell virulent poison, regardless of conse- queaces. We repeat that this is the only whiskey of the kind in the world. We are its discoverers and sole manufacturers, and we challenge any one to produce a whiskey like it, either in, purity or excellence. Another thing we would impress upon our friends is, not to be deceived by other malt whiskies, as there are Just as many grades of bad malt whiski equally as poisonous as other whiskies, and none of them are pure. It is under this guise that several unscrupulous manufacturers are trying to reap beneflts from our name and prestige. < THE DUFFY MALT WHISKEY CO., Baltimore, Ma. z 24H STREET N.W._ Pie ik IN EEPING, ‘Mathematics, Penmaashlp, and in’ all Engisa Branches ‘Terms moderate. “Apply to C: F.
