LIFE IN NEW YORK. Glimpses .at. Fashionable Life by An Insider. From the New York Sun. The smug-visaged person who acts as a facto- tum at the social entertainments of the people who compose the more showy grade of society in New York city unbent himself sufficiently a few nights ago to give voice to some of his in- formation on the question of the growing sayety and carelessness of New York women. He bas before this contributed certain reftec- tons about the society people to the Sun with entire acceptance. He is a superintendent of entertainments, and # man whose life is passed im serving people of abundant and liberal hos- pltality. In stature he is small, in manner abrupt, and in attire modest in the extreme. “The question is often asked,” he said with great deliberation, “whother New York women &re growing faster now than they were afew Years ago. Everybody is aware of the decline in chureh going, and the briskness of the sea- son after it is once started. Rumors of poker parties in which women play for high stakes are numerous, aud there are many other indi- cations of a general laxity on the part of the morals of New York women which are dis- cussed by the citizens at large. To begiu with, the word ast, as used in Atuerica and as com: monly employed in England, has very diifer- gnt meanings. On the other ‘side of the water I have heard one sister speak of another as being very fast, while the sentiment was en- dorsed by the mother who stood near. The term does not carry an idea of wickedness, low moral tone, or questionable habits with It at al When'an English girl «peaks of another as fast, sue means that she is a daring horse- Woman, and indefatigable dancer, an enthusi- astic tennis player, and fond of entertainments of every sort. In New York the word implies much more than this, although the bug. lish set here use It freely alter the mapner of their cousins across the pond. When I speak of che manners and habits of New York women 4 use the word ‘{ast’ in the American sense. “That many of the old safeguards and con- ventional barriers against fligitiness and care- lessness have been removed of recent years in w York is plain. It is easy enough for all of us to remember when young girls—by which Imean debutants of from sevenween to twenty- two years of age—were not allowed to appear in decoliette dresses. They usually dressed simply in white, with the forearm bare and the corsage cut slightly V shaped at the neck and filed in with lace. Gradually the V widened at the top and deepened at the point, while the sleeves shrunk up, until now it is the com- mon sight to see girl whose bast and arms | Justity such exposure, wearing a corsage that rivals that of a Hussian princess in frankness and in the lavish display of nature’s charn seagon or two, girls have taken to low costumes of this sort at dinners asat and they even attend the opera clad ‘a the samie manner. Of course this does not imply any idea of reiaxed morais in special in- stances, but it does show that the general tone —_— it ee ret tlemen in New York with as much of a how! as it does in London. “Does any man reall: believe that theatricals have an ennobling and elevating effect? I know there js a lot of eant of that sort, but I honestly doubtif even the men who indulge in it the most really believe in It even to the slightest extent. Servants and maids couid teil some queer stories of the frolics that occur at rehear- sals, and the love making of a married woman Yo a'man other than ber husband. The dancin, the tender passage between the soubrette an the comedian, the quiet and confidential talks e final supper in the wings during the waits, and the general dispersion to or 2 in the morning may all be conducive to a closer attention to the more earnest affection for home ties, but [doubt it. So I count the dramatic craze, as it is at pres- ent carried on, as one more evidence of the fust- ness of New York women. That th is i like what it w: ‘The owner of the small pocket book containing the gublolued notes can recover his to the Sun office his name and the ni ing age indubitable, but their losses an the game are unknown except to a limited number of confidential iriends, In #geueral Way It may be said that the former rigid and severe notions concerning what was and what ‘was not proper for a woman in good society to doin New York have been stretched and ex- tended until soctety here is to-da: , twenty years ago,’ nn eee lomestic duties and a ‘The Diary of » Mourner. It was also at one tme con- | sidered a little risky for a girl to touch wine of | any sort, but a great many society girls are pre- vailed upon to sip a glass of wine nowadays | without much urging. As for the subjects that | are discussed at dinner, ig is simply ainazing. | Somehow the old idea’ of modgst, retiring a: girlish innocence has gone completely, and tue | girl who ‘knowsit all’ is the most admired. This is unquestionably owing to a very large exten to the fact that i has nearly all of her fun before she is married, Whereas On the other side of the water her tree- dom doesn’t begin untilafter the wedding cere- mony. “A far more significant indication, however, of the decline of society people trom the oid Puritan and Knickerbocker standard is found athe sway which women of decidediy que> tionable reputations manage to exercise in cireles from which one would natu: them to be excluded. In this respeet, other, it is certain that demoralization has set in, The stern old society leaders, who once ab- horred scandal as they did death, have disap- peared from the Held and a lot of irisky young iatrons who have not the moral stamina of the eldersociety arbitrators have tal The result of all this is decidedly queer when ‘we compare the condition of things to-day with | shat of thirty yearsago. I could run overadozen | fast enough to have caused their instant ban- isament in Boston or Philadelphia, but who are in as good stanaing in society here as they sare to be. One of them fs a woman of such wonounced beauty that her picture has been published in a number of the English society magazines, and the sale of her photographs in Paris and London rivals that of the pictures of the most famous of the English professional beauties. She has a superb ficure, and is a capital whip. Most New Yorkers ‘who have promenaded Fifth avenue know her by sight, | sor she often drives alittle team of jet black horses in a cart which was built for her in Lon- | don,and which is exactly similar to the on grounds of Sandringham, She divides her time the year round among New York, Newport, London, Paris and Pau. Once in a’ while her husband accompanies her, but only when it is wbsolutely necessary for propriety’s sake. At ther times she manages to join parties of friends, and, as she is ciever as well as beau- Yiful and the possessor of at least a million dollars, she is not exactly a drug in the mar- “But the husband?” “Ob, there's no trouble at all with him; he’s pensioued, you know. The effort which New Yor society is making toad the brilliancy and dash which prevail in London to its amusements is having the same effect, only ina lesser degree, which tie introduction of metropolitan custom has upon the society of @ provincial town. Solid wort, good blood, and respectable attainments give ‘way to the dash and glitter of the protessional oF amateur entertainments.
