[Copyrighted, 1986. } Sueh a lovely thing it was, that house on Ferncroft Hill, with its lawns and gardens and Groves about it, you could uever fancy evil @oming near it. Such a lovely atmosphere of Peace and beanty was there, such lovely Women were sitting in their wicker chairs on the flagged space under the shadow of the lofty group rlacing elms, surrounded by the Dritiant Beds and great vases of flowers flam- ing in the sun beyond! For all the worid such Innocent ideal life !t seemed, ths life of theirs, im such @ place, as that life pietured on the Watteau fans. Butafter all was that Watteau life anything but wolfish guilt and conspiracy Masquerading under lamblike fleece with pas- toral gambois? Yet, to say truth, there was never woman made with less consp and guilt about her than Mra. Louie, the responsible life and soul Of the place. I doubt if ahe was ever acquainted With an artifice before that eruel December day; certainly she never was afterward.
