Forster recalls one of the stories he used to tell, with much amuse- ment about his Quaker parents, illustrative of their simple kindness and the way it was often imposed upon. His motner was the originator of the Society for ‘the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and her virtues live in the memor; ot the "poor for miles around their old home. One day a wandering showman dragged | a jaded and footsore dancing bear througit the iron gates and asked leave to exhibit its antics | to Mrs. Forster and her children. “Friend,” replied the tender-hearted lady, “put away vur stick, See how weary the pour bear is. Give it an afternoon's rest in our stable, and sive thee thy dinuer and three shill ings.” The offer was gladly accepted, and the showman dined and Was paid. Some bLours afterward the stable door was opened. The rested and refreshed bear had eaten Mra. For. ster’s favorite pony. Another of Mr. Forster's stories was about himself. Some years ago, while lunching in Dublin one day, he found ‘himself playing in- voluntarily the role of Haroun al Raschid. At the same table was an outspoken young gentle. man, whose advances toward conversation were not declined by the Irish secretary. In a short time the conversation turned on the state of anareby in which the west and south of Ire- land were plunged, and tbe opening remarks of the young genuleman were so truly liberat that Mr. Forster felt they had met on common ground. This opinion was, however, somewhat modified when his companion, Warming with Ube subject, said: “Some reform in land tenure will certainly be necessary when the country becomes settled, but no wonder it is in such a state when we are governed by that d—4 old fool, Buckshot Forster.’ Finding a Helpmeet.
