LEGISLATION CONSIDERED BY THE BAR ASSO- CIATION, Ata meeting of the Bar association yester- day afternoon reports were made from the leg- islative committee in reference to various measures which have been sent to the commit- tees of Congress. Mr. James M. Johnson, from the same committee, reported a bill providing for the removal of guardians, executors and ad- ministrators by the orphans’ court for certain causes to be tried by the court. The president of the association was instructed to request the Court in General Term not to adopt the pro- posed new rule which contemplates the dis- Missal of suits at each new term of court if not renewed. The committee on legislation was instructed to devise and report some better Inode of selecting juries in the District than is now provided by law. The committee was also instructed, on motion of Mr. Elliot, to oppose the passage by Congress of the Police Court bill reported to the District committee by Senator Harris, providing for magistrates and the re- tention of the Police Court with a jury. a In Favor of Denominational Schools. McAvoy, in his address, strongly urged the support of denominational public schools, The public school tax, he said, was of little benefit to Catholics, Mr. Mallet stated that Carroll institute of this city had paid $15,000 for fts building. A course of lec- tures by inembers of Congress, clergymen and others has been given the past winter on higher politics and historical subjects. A night school for youths atd young men unabie to attend day’ schools, and who are employed during the day, has been in operation for twelve years. ‘The'librarv of the society contains 2,600 books. Resolutions were adopted declaring that the members of the union “deem it a matter of jus- tice that the state should adopt public denomi- national schools. ‘That every religious denom|- nation wishing to adopt the system should re ceive its quota of the school fand in proportion to the number of children taught in {ts schools. ‘That we pledge ourselves to use all legal means to see that the rights of parents be respected; that the privileges which the state grants to others be extended to us; that even-handed Justice be dealt to all, and ‘that none be taxed Without rece:ving corresponding beneflt.” Mr, William H. D, WARFIELD.—Abel D. Warfield, one of the most notable citizens of Alexandria, was fouud dead at his home on Lee street this morning.
