About fiity uniformed officers of the Salva- fon army, accompanied by a brass band, marched through the streets last night from their barracks at 4th and L streets, to Masonic Temple, where a large audience was awaiting their arrival. The army marched through the hall and took seats on the platform. For some moments the army led the congregation in singing several familiar hymns until the ar- rival of commissioner Smith and wife, who were greeted with a shout of hallelujah and the aving of flags and handkerchiefs. The meet- ing v then opened by Capt. Walsh, the con- verted minstrel, who sang “Ob! I_am go happy” accompanying himself on the banjo. ‘The com- missioner then read from the 5th chapter of Luke in whieh he said was laid down the prin- ciples of the army. He said that the Salvation army knew what they were about and where we fail.— “He will come up” shouted a bushy haired colored man who preaches on the street corners. A shout of hailelujab went up from the army. Encouraged by his first success the colored ex- horter finished a second half formed sentence of the commissioner. “Why don’t you keep quiet?” inquired the commissioner." “If there was a box in the corner we would put you in it” “Then I'd holier through de hole” shouted the colored divine. (Laughter, the army join- ing in). After finishing the lesson of the day, other officers spoke and the meeting closed with singing.
