A NEW AND POTENT DANGER TO HEALTH. ‘From the Sunday Herald. ‘The growing popularity of lager beer as a bev- erage among all the classes of American popu- lation, while an excellent tning in itself (as it Supersedes strong drink on one side and ice water on the other), has had its nataral result, The keen competition among the many who have gone into the business has resulted of late in a cu! ‘some dealers to a figure that comnran ‘attention. ‘ts say that the local market is flooded with cheap imita- tions of lager beer which contain matters very noxious to health, and people who are not on their guard are liable to be gradually or rapidly polsoned by what should be a wholesome an refreshing drink. Among the ingredients thus sed are gluctee, or grape sugar, and the pro- ‘corn, ins ‘of hops, are expensive. The ‘terrible increase ‘of fatal kidney disease is said to be largely due to these erude substances, which act very badly on the delicate internal’ organs. If the sale is not checked by the caution of purchasers or public authority the evil will go on increasing. In an interview with several parties largely interested in the trade it was learned that some brands of beer are now offered at what would be the actual cost of manufacture if nonestl: made, leaving nothing for the expense of hand- ling, bottling, delivery, incidentals, thus result- ing in an actual loss to the brewer, unless he is julterating or counterieiting to an extent suf- fictent to cover these expenses. It is offered at prices which would enable retailers to sell two lasses for five cents and make the same profit they formerly did on one glass. “Evidently the purchaser must be wronged in one or both of two ways. He is paying an exorbitant profit to the retailer, or he is drinking stuff that is unfit for human beings. “This business is suicidal,” said one of those interviewed, “to all who engage init. It notonly. cuts off the legitimate profit of honest brewers, but it will tend to excite a prejudice against lager beer, which will be felt most severely by those who sell the cheap and the bad beer, in- cluding both restaurants and rs. ‘The Temedy is in the hands of the public and the trade. It consists in avolding all cheap and Sueplcicas beers, however attractive to the eye and palate, (since this may be due to artful ‘doctoring,’) and stick to the standard brands, which have lowered neither price nor quality. ‘This ‘cheap’ beer will prove the most expensive in the end, first to those who drink it, and then to those who sell it, They ought to take warn- ing in time.” 1 We Will Continue to Sell Ladies’ Gowns worth $1.25, for 89c., to-day, and to-morrow and Wednesday.
