Jupic’s APPEARANCE.—The first ap- pearance in Washington of the much heralded judie was made at Albaugh’s last night before @n audience of moderate proportions, which contained a large percentage of foreigners, and ‘Was altogether a very fashionable assemblage. From such an audience the Parisian come- dienne could not fail of a cordial reception and kindly attention, however adventitious circum- stances might conspire to render her first ap- pearance here (on Ash Wednesday night) less auspicious thaa it might have been. It has been generally agreed by American critics that Mme. Judic isnot by any means seen at her best in “Mlle. Nitouche.” This musical comedy 4s remarkable among French works for ite cs nocuous motive and the comparative proprie! ofits story. In the English version given here by Lotta earlier in the season, anything like slowness ‘was dissipated through the interjection of alarge amount of vigorous American fun into the piece by the star herself and her lead- ing support. In the original version pre- sented iast’ night by Mme. Judic, the absence of this rollicki: merriment could not fail to be noted, th the superior artistic merit of the lead! impersonations was quite beyond question. The Denise of Lotta ‘was a mischievous littie romp, who carried her audience by storm, if at all. The Dentse of Judic is a demure little hypocrite, whoslowly wins her way as events reveal the charming quality of her hypocrasy. The performance of the French troupe as a ‘whole, it must be admitted, was somewhat deficient in comie warmth, due, no doubt, in great measure to the comparative coldnéss of a large part of the audience, whose imperfect knowledge of French did not allow them to closely follow the artists. Of the per- fection of Mme. Judic’s art there can be no question. It is of the rarest excellence, and as revealed last night In the role of Denise could hot well have been more refined and delicate, Mme. Judic’s subdued methods are calculated to upset all preconceived notions ot French Yaudevillo, and even to create the impression that many of our American soubrettes are dreadfully naughty and hoydenish. The lady's fine face and engaging manner at once sess an audience in her favor. Her girlish sur- prise when she learned in the second act that she was actually on the stage of @ theater, and the delicious coyness with which she the chanson of Cadet and Babet provoked the audi- ence to an outburst of genuine enthusiasm, M. ‘Mezieres created much quiet amusement as Celestin, This evening Mme. Judic will be seen in the lively comic opera, “La Belle Helene.” The more familiar scenes of this arhusing little work will, no doubt, afford her more ample op- ies and excite portunity to arouse the 22 the merriment of an English speaking audi- oe RRR, OO Y ¥ FREES AE RRR.O O YY AAL ERE ROO b4 Aaa L R R OO 4 ALLIS BBE A K KIt NN N GGG BOB AA KK INNNG @ ete ke Bas a KUN NN GG PPP OO W W WwW DDD EEE RRR PPO OWWWWD DE RR PPP O O WWWW D DEE RRR Oo. 0 WWWW D DE REB- oo Ww ew DDD KEER Re ABSOLUTELY PURE ‘This Powder never varies A marvel of parity, strength and wholesomeness.
