King. oer at The Liq ACTION AT THE MEETING LAST NIGHT—A VALUABLE ASSISTANT OFFERS I$ SER- VICES. ‘The Liquor Dealers’ association, at a meeting Jast evening at Cosmopolitan hall, received the report of the committee on iegislafion, which report opposes the high license bill recently in- troduced in Congress, and favors the retention of the’preseni license. The committee believe that the passage of this act would be in the in- terest of the larger establishments,and have the effect of closing out all the small ones. The committee are in favor of the proposed change ‘wanich does not require the signatures of prop- erty owners and residents to be obtained every year. The committee was instructed to oppose the local option bill. An old gentleman appeared before the asso- ciation and claimed that he was qualified to convince the most obstinate and bigoted that the use of liquor and not its abuse was the rightof ali men. He said that his arguments Were so powerful and his reasoning so cogent that advocates of probibition had fled from his sight, and especially in the state of California he bad driven from the state an active temper- ance worker. He claimed that he was espe- cially gifted in “shutting up the women” as he expressed it, and earnestly assured the Members that he was not afraid to meet any | juan or Woman on this question.
