Birney a few days ago visited the Com- missioners and protested against any permit being granted to Mr. J. F. Waggaman or other person to dig up the streets of LeDroit park for the purpose of laying sewers. He sub- sequently put in writing an inquiry as to what right the Commissioners had to give a permit for work on streets which are not under the control of the District but are pri. vate property. Lieut. Townshend made a pia laying down a plan for sewer connections r Le Droit park. The permit granted to Mr Wi an, so Lieut. Town- shend ‘says, ‘merely allows @ sewer connection to be made in accordance with that plan. The District does not enter into the ques- Uon of ownership of the property, nor does it undertake to do the work. It Mr. Waggaman does the work and commits a trespass the question will be one between him- self and his neighbors in the park. The permit given —_ only _ prescribes what will be approved by the District authori- ties, “viewing it from a sanitary standpoint. ‘The Commissioners have carefully avoided any action which would look like an approval or ac- geptance of the present plan of streets in Le Droit park, = es THE Potomac FRUIT GROWERS.—The annua reunion and festival of the Potomae Fruit Growers’ association was held at the National Rifles’ armory ‘Tuesday evening.
