CLOSING TESTIMONY TO-DAY. This morning Mr. Dempsey's re-direct ex- amination was resumed. He dented that there was anything true in the statement of Carrigan that $1,500 of the $1,622 was a fraud and was obtained to pay to Wetmore as “hush money.” He was not certain, but did not think he was at Carrigan’s house tn the evening. He-cross: Witness denied most positively ever visiting the office of Justice Hall with Carrigan, or seeing him on June 16th. Witness told Car: rigan that he heard that he (C.) had reported him (D.)as having put in false vouchers, and threatened to have him arrested if he did not make an affidavit retracting the statement, ‘The defendant called Wm. Galt, E. E. White, C.W, Howard, G.W. Pearson, J. W. Pilling, J. L. Barbour, J. W. Corson, and they tesified as to character, and closed its case. Daniel Carrigan was re-called by the govern- ment in rebuttal and identified the ailldavit made at Justice Hall's. H. A. Hall, justice of the peace, was called to testity as to Garrigan maling an ‘amMidavit. Ob- Jection was made, but overruled. Witness had ‘@ distinct recollection of Carrigan with another party coming in and making the affidavit after the Spring of 1883; they lald down the paper and he filied it up, administered the oath, and Carrhgan took the paper. Allen testified to seeing Dempsey come into Judge Hall’s with another party, whom. he did not know, about two years ago. ‘This closed the'testimony, with the exception of the production of recelpts for stationery. She came here from Philadelphia, it is stated, December 18, and after locating at 315 T street, secured from a Philadelphia instalment house $1,009 worth of turniture, but the Philadelphia deaier, it is alleged, suceceded in getting only $100 trom her, but aiterwards sent here and secured the furniture. Then, it is stated, she went to a hotel here. ‘The police say that she Is known in sev- eral cities as a dangerous confidence woman. This morning she was taken from the fitth pre- cinct station in the patrol wagon to the Police Court, and there placed with the other prisoners in the cells.
