SAD PLIGHT OF A RESPECTABLY DRESSED BOY— WAS IT THE RESULT OF OPIUM OR WHISKY?— SALOONS WHICH SELL LIQUOR TO MINORS. “Is that a man lying on the snow?” called out the conductor, as a Stax reporter jumped from an avenue car at the corner of 24 and B streets, about twelveo’clock last night. The car Was in motion, and was soon a square off. It had just stopped snowing, and the wind was cutting its way along the empty streets, the drug store on the corner was closed, and no hght and not a human being was In sight. The reporter looked about him, and at a little dis- tance saw a dark object stretched out in a snow Griit, Just then a gentleman, who had jamped from the car further on, joined the reporter. They found that the object that bad attracted their attention was a boy apparently fourteen or fifteen years old. He was unconscious, and at fh ppeared to be dead. He was very nicel , and in no way was his appear- ance in keeping with his condition, While the reporter and the stranger were rubbing his hands and looking G about for a place to take three boys, neither of whom appeared to F fifteen years old, eame out of a building on B street, and claimed the unconscious boy, offering to take him to his home, which they said was in Grant row. MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN REAL ESTATE- AFFECTED. To-day in the case of Thaw against Ritchie, Involving the title to two parcels of ground in square 160, which in the court below was de cided in favor of the plaintiff, Judge Hagner delivered the opinion of the Court in General Term, reversing the decree below. The court holds that the Probate Court has no jurisdic- m in ordering the sale of infant’s real estate, under the act of Maryland of 1798, which is in force here. The anuouncement of the decision caused considerable comment among the mem- bers of the bar, for it will affect, itis said, the titles toa large humber of pleces of property in this Distriet, which will amount in value to probably as Much as $7,000,000. ‘The question sing of so much importance, notice was given of a motion for a reargument before a full bench, ——— Chief Justice Cartter’s Portrait.
