THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D.C Lr bocnm, % THE EVENING STAR HOLIDAY GOODS. HOLIDAY GOODS. HOLIDAY GOODS. HOLIDAY GOODS. —— SS HOLIDAY Goops, _ WASHINGTON WEDNESDAY... ... December 20, 1885. CROSBY S. NOYES.......... ‘The Evening Star bas a regalar, permanent bows Sde daily cirentation more than treble that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal to that of all the ether daily papers here added together. & NEW STORY BY MES. BURNETT. Extraerdiaary Literary Attractions for the New Year. THE STAR of Saturday, January 2d, will con tain the jirst part of an original novelette by Washinaton's favorite novelist, MRS. FRANCIS HODGSON BURNETT, author of “That Lasso Lowrte's,” etc., ete., entitled “MUCH ADO.” This story. which ix marked by the best charac teristics of its talented author, will run through four numbers of the Saturday double-sheet STAR, @nd, as it is copyrighted, its perusal cam be en- foyed only by the readers of this journal and those of @ few other papers published at widely separated points which are associated with it in his new and popular feature of daily journalion, Readers of THE STAR will find this noveletie Rot only a source of enjoyment to themselves, but @literary entertainment well worthy the compli- tment of being sent to absent friends. Copies of the doublesheet STAR containing it may be had at the counter wrapped ready for address for TWO CENTS, or stamped for mailing at THREE CENTS, each. —> > It unfortunately begins to look now as ‘though the proposed monument to Grant in New York will never be built,—at least not on the seale and in the way at first contemplated. Only a little over the tenth part of the sum originally counted upou has been raised, and #8 the managers have got into @ row among themselves, the probability is that contribu- tons will cease to come in. The explanation Of the existing difficulty {s that a number of the general committee were dissatisfied with the eriticiams that had been made upon the fact that most of them had made no subscrip- tion to the fund whiie calling upon the public © send in money, and so seem disposed to Withdraw from active connection with the en- terprise; but this explanation is so discredita- ble to the gentlemen constituting that body ‘that It fs difficult to accept it as the true reason. The fact remains, however, that very few of the prominent members of the committee have given anything: but one would think that the publicity given to that circumstance ‘ought to have nerved them to do their duty in | di the premises, rather than serve asa pretext for Fanning away from it, which they seem dis- posed to do. — The provincialism of the New York press on @uancial topics has become a proverb, and this customary narrowness is weil illustrated by their treatment of the silver coinage question. Whatever the merits ef that question may be, the amusing and provoking feature in the handling {t receives in most of the New York Bewspapers is the incapacity of these journals to understand the sentiment of the great terri- tory of the west on the subject. One of the newspapers this morning, for instance, advises members of Congress to improve the holiday re- ceas by “learning public sentiment” on silver; Gtcourse by @ visit to Manhattan island. ‘There is a strong element of humor in a New York newspaper lecturing a western Congress- man on nis ignorance of “public sentiment,” tecause he does not shape his votes in Congress | Yo sult the fancy of New York bankers. The | average western Congressman may not be the embodiment of ail that is wise and pure and good in statesmanship, but he fs tolerably fa- miliar with “public sentiment” in his “dee- striet;” quite as well informed on that subject, in fact, as the able young journalists who write editorials in the New Yori newspapers. $< Dr. Billings, who accompanied the dog-bitten wark boys to Paris, telegraphs home that Pasteur advises against the summary Killing of which have bitten people and are sup- to be mad. He urges that such dogs | caught and put ina cage. If really | rabies is certain to develop in ten that If no symptoms appear within the bitten persons need fear no farther anxiety. He says that dogs are often Dr. Billings adds that if the Pasteur system is generally introduced into this country it will be wecessary to have at least 5,000 rabbits through which to transmit the virus. The poor, gentle hares; they must now return good for evil, Chased as they have been time out of mind by the hounds, they must now turn about and offer up their lives at wholesale in their pursuers’ bebalt $< ‘It ts quite a long time since there has been a bond cail, and the one issued yesterday was for nota very large amount. It has been under- Stood that the policy of the administration has been averse to taking up the bonds at a rapid Fate, pending the settlement of the silver ques ton, but now that the prospects of a change in the col ¢ laws are so slight, it may be that the government has decided to go ahead can- selling the debt as usual. It is said at the ‘Treasury that the cali is rendered desirable at ‘this time by the high price of exchange, the danger of gold shipments, the requirements of ‘the sinking fund and the demands of trade. $$$ “A grown-up friend” of the Children’s Christ- tas Club makes acknowledgement in their be- aalt for the generous aid received from various quarters that made the Christmas entertain- ment for poor children so great asuceess, but he entirely fails to mention the name of the one person over all others to whom the eredit is due Jor the conception and execution of the affair— ‘Mr. Ross Perry. $$. -—__ The Vanderbilt helts took their shares of the dead man’s money without grumbling or con- test. Even those who were cut off with a beg- garly ten millions decided not to make a fuss Or call im the lawyers, a determination which Was quite sensible on their part, but very dis tressing to the lawyers. ————— oa For several years the leaders of society have discouraged the use of liquor as a feature of New Year's hospitality. The evils of the cus- tora are so apparent that they peed scarcely be @welt = Fortunately, the ladies have pretty agreed that it is a poor way to begin & new year by keeping an open bar and joining ‘to make their friends sick and fulish. oo pe So ie EE EL ah - THE CELEBRATED MINNESOTA PATENT PROCESS FLOUR, Pwithout a doubt the most Bearrrrct and the most jcemiricus Flour in the World ‘The Millers have not ouly the most perfect Mill, improved “Machie ee octane hoes ald sie state ig he oe ty ofthis weapons Phere asia, re ga es a Egy gel ie or arr eat Sosa We ceca marae ears ee Gan ent rae Medged tact tat tn this Vor spastic SFation ‘of the glutindas particles of the wheat berey Seta thcrouch citation of ai wank’ sata eeeae Maller as af last been reached, aod is consequently | ow Serarors: viekding wore trent teineteent San ag ecber_Pisar the bow sae nda from its making qualities tt the cheapest. an Py aay Flour mabe. “every sack oo Flour minds. “Every sec: Sad Tectia diecast STERLING'S ST.
