al THE EVENING STAR: _ ‘THE EVENING STAR HOLIDAY GOODS. HOLIDAY “GOODS. HOLIDAY GOODS. HOLIDAY GOODS. WASHINGTON a. December 25, 1885. CROSBY 8. NOYES...... Editor. The Evening Star has = regular, permanent bona Side daily circniation more than treble that ef any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal to that of all the other duily papers here added together. No good reasons existed for a change in the New Year program at the White House, and it is pleasant to see that the novelties threat- ened in some vf the newspapers are not to be introduced. The customary order of exercises is approved by experience, and can advantage ously be adhered to. The general observance of the day will also be preserved in its essential feature of calls and lunch tables, though in New York it is under. stood that such acelebration is distinctly out of fashion. The peculiar formation of society here will, however, exert a conservative influ- ence. It is not possible in any other elty of the country for the iadies to hold an annual review of dipiomats and warriors and statestnen in their official splendor, and as these gentlemen are obliged to don their gorgeous vestments In the line of duty it is easy and pleasant for them tosupplement their official calls by making a found among an admiring elrele of lady ac- Quaintances. In Washington, therefore, New Year's calling will die hard, and really there ts Ro reason why it should die. ‘The custom is a venerable and useful one; it Is an easy way to pay old debts; it offers a pleasant interchange of good wishes; and under modern influences it affords little temptation to excess, — Mr. Bigelow’s ion of the office of United States Assistant Treasurer at New York is agreat puzzie to politicians, and one that is not likely to be explained until the publication of his letter to the President, if then, though Mr. Bigelow says that document will satisty everybody as to the propriety of his course. It may do that and still not state the real reasons for his action. Meantime guesses are in order; and we venture the suggestion that a feeling that the office was hardiy big enough fur the man was not without weizht in reaching the conclusion now announeed, and that when to this feeling was added a disinelination for con- fining work and a positive aversion topecunlary responsibility the putting away of the oficial crown became a very easy mutter, It isto be observed furthermore that all the eclat the office can give came with the appointment and confirmation to it, and that the salary it brings is not needed by Mr. Big —__———-=—___ The hostilities against the administration, of whieh we heard so mueb during the recess, are very slow in beginning. One story was that the republican Senators had conferred together and were going to fight the appointments. But they are now roaring as gi sueking doves. Then various democratic leaders were to de- | clare war on the President, and in one or two | cases rather bellizerent manifestoes were pul- Ushed. But as soon as the forces came to short range the zeal of the attacking party has cooled down. Among those who have been charged with a desire to “smash things” at the White House ts Senator Payne. An Ouio newspaper recently setiorth bis alleged program with considerable detail. But before the type was cold, Senator Payne came out with an explicit and compre- henstve denial of the story. Somehow the fight doesn't begin, evidently to the great disup- pointment of some oi the bystanders. ‘The days have been growing longer since the 21st inst., and will continue to lengthen per- ceptibly for some six months to come, but ft will be a long time yet before any diminution | in thesize of gas bills can be observed. These yellow vile-shaped demands for your money or Your light constitute the one thing in human experience which Is exempt from the inexor- able laws of natare. With the meter whose in- | credible edicts thes enforce they represent the only near approach yet made to realizing the idea of perpetual motion. They titerally defy ‘the decrees of both God and man. They are notaffected by time, tlde, nor the ordinary fluctuations of trade; and, unlike every thing else in the physical economy of life, they con- tract somewhat during the torrid heats of sum- mer, and more than make up for the loss sus- tained in this anomalous proceeding by fre- quent and extensive expansions during the cold weather of winte: ——————— Judge Campbell makes out a strong case against Senators Butler and Vest, who claim that the recent action of Dakota in forming a state government is revolutionary. According to Judge Campbell the citizens of that territory are proceeding strictly within law and prece- dent, and he thins that all there is that fs rev- olutionary in the situation is the refusal of Congress to admit a state which is eligible and willing to be admitted to the Union.
