THE EVENING STAR, SO WASHIN THURSDAY rod December 17, 1885. Editor. €ROSBY S. NOYES... ‘The Evening “tar has = regular, permanent beng fide dally cireuintion more than treble that ef any other daily paper published im Washington, and cqual to that of all the ether daily papers here added together. It ts rather curious that Pasteur’s discoveries im the treatment of hydrophobia should come Just at a time when there seems to be almost an’ epidemic of rabies among dogs. Possibly the interest in his discoveries may have attracted more general attention to cases of hydropho- Dia. But the statisties show that within a few months there has been an unusual number of deaths trom the bites of mad dogs. Many be- Meve that the dixease of rabies, like other dis- eases, may take on an epidemic form; and if 30, it may be true that we are now passing through such a dangerous season. Be this as it may, the public is taking the keenest Interest just now in the general sub- Ject of bydrophobia. Dogs run everywhere in the streets and are domesticated in very many homes, where they enjoy the status almost of members of the family. Amd if It is true that ‘tmese universal companions and friends of \miankind are now exposed to a distemper ‘which threatens the lives of their masters, that ‘faet is of an importance that can scarcely be ex- agyerated. The Interest felt In the subject both here and im England, where a remarkable number of eases of hydrophobia have recently occurred, dhas resulted in the throwing of much new light ou the causes and symptoms of the malady. Dr. George Fleming, an English authority on the subject, declares that the disease is now epidemicand should be treated as such. He ‘urges the severest measures of precaution. He says that rabies is of slow incubation, and that All dogs should be muzzled for two years. All ‘stray dogs should be killed and their bodies Nburned. Dr. Fleming locates the virus not in Yhe blood, but in the brain fluid and spinel cord. He regards the notions that angry dogs cause rabies, and that rabid dogs will not face ‘water, as popular fallacies. burst out in Brussels in 1868. He observes that the disease is most common among male dogs. Both he and Mr. Fleming speak hopefully of X ENS Cunrsras Pi ‘HOLIDAY GOODS. ___ HOLIDAY GODS. _ — 17. 1885—WITH SUPPLEMENT. Pasteur’s experiments, but do not regard them yet as conclusive. On this side of the water scarcely less interest prevails on the subject than im England and France. The Newark episode attracted wide aitention, and almost every day we find in the newspapers fresh accounts of bites. A rabid dog was killed in Jersey City yesterday, also. The sentiment among physicians is that while the danger may be exaggerated, there exists, for some reason, a greater predisposition than usual among dogs to become rabid, and hence that all proper precautions should be used to avoid accident. At yesterday's session of the National Veteri- nary association in tbis eity, Dr. Plagemann advocated the treatment of patients with water of ammonia, which, he said, was the only safe agent toemploy. It is held that the ammonia, being alkaline in reaction, has the power of destroying the virus. —————— Probably the real importance of the assasaina- tion society in San Francisco has been exag- gerated, as in most cases these conspirators <¢ Simm.
