Aristocratie England Is shocked by the elec- tien to the new parliament of a number of “common people.” It is urged against several of them even that they are retall tradesm and the most snobbish people in the world are aghast at the intrusion. Heretofore the nobility and the rich landed and commercial interests have managed to keep the House of Commons pretty much to themselves. And one of the chief obstacles which the privilexed classes threw in the way of the people was that which Englishmen never tire of denouncing as the scandal of American polities—money. Mem- bers of parliament have no salary, mileage or emoluments whatever, it being understood that the “Lords and Commons” were to be composed of the “nobility and gentry” who had the time and means todevote whatever of their leisure was requisite to assist Her Majesty to rule her empire. ‘This tradition has now been rudely jostled. ‘The rising tide of democracy has forced the government to open the suffrage to all classes, and the novel expedient of paying the sala of poor members by subscription has made it possible for men who are obliged to work for a Hving to enter on a public career. Hence, at this election a considerable number of practices workingmen have been returned to parliament not only from Ireland Lut from England also. ‘The purpose is to support these true repre- sentatives of the masses by popular subserip- tion until parliament sees fit to pay for public | service out of the public treasury. And it is entirely proper that the friends of liberal insti- | tutions in this country should aid this fund.
