The Washington. high ‘ere vice is not adapted to this purpose. All of the cewers under the appropria- tion for the completion of the main sewer sys- tem of the District of Columbia have now (November 17) been connected, with the exeep- tion of the eastern and middle sections of the Boundary-street sewer. The middle section can be completed by December 31, 1885, The eastern section will not be finished at that date. ‘The rate of progress on this section has not been satisfactory. A large number of lateral sewers must be built to connect the houses with the mein sewers, ‘i MS As large an ‘appropriation as ie should be devoted to thix purpose. While the permit system is open to those who require sew- ers before they can be constructed by the city, the necessity for its use should be reduced to minimum. It is an injustice to the tew to take advantage of their necessities tocompel them toconstraet works irom which the many de- rive equal advant Of the outlets of kew- ers discussed by Captain Greene, the one re- quiring the earliest attention is thatat 17th and B streets northwest. It it is decided that this work shall be performed by the city the estimate for sewers should be correspondingly increased. The cleaning and repairing of sewers has boen under the direction of the superiptendent of streets, It 1s recommended that the appropri tion for this pui be Increased to $30,000, There has been built during the last year over sixteen miles of sewers. To clean these sewers and clean and flush the traps connected with them has largely increased the work of this department. With the introduction of the net Water supply automatic flushing apparatus ean be Introduced, which will reduce the amount ofclenning of sewers which will be necessary, but the health and cleanliness of the clis will require frequent flushing and cleaning ot traps. A number of sewers constructed under the board of public works should be relaid. It fs impossible to do this work this season on account of the necessity of husbanding this ap- propriation for cleaning traps and for the repairs which are continually required. Riot in a Church. Father Jaworski came forward to speak to the people, but, eager hands clutched him and tore his habit off. Fathers Domorowski and Jaworski were pelt- ed with mud while crossing the streets on their return to their seminary, opposite the church. It is now learned that County Clerk Crane, of Westchester county, N, ¥., who has been miss- ing since Wednesday of last week, issued a large amount ot forged paper before his fight. His method was to draw a check on a Yonkers bank and induce some friend to cash it. When the check came back he would have some clever excuse ready, and promise to fix it right away, but he kept his promise only ally. This style ot doing business soon brought him into disrepute financially, and he became unable to borrow, He now resorted to issuing forged paper in the shape of notes and mort- gages until he had secured between $50,000 &nd $75,000, and then fled. His victims in- cluded relatives and persons of every class. He was looked upon as a clever, liberal fellow, Crane is about 35 years old. He was renomi- nated by the democrats for the office of county clerk by acclamation in October and elected by @ large majority at the November election, ee A CoLoreD LEGISLATOR IN TROUBLE.—A warrant was sworn out Monday betore United States Commissioner Pleasants for the arrest of J, R.
