W. ; Burchell, on F street, opposite the Ebbitt, was found to be forced open, when the clerks ar- rived at the store this morning. It stands near the book-keeper’s desk, which is shut off from view from the street by the staircase leading to | the upper stories, Entrance was gained, ft is | thought, from the upper story, which is used for apartments, but is now vacant. The men must have been working at the safe for some | time, as it was forced open. The iron baron the side into which the bars of the door slide | was bent Intoa curve, and then the bars were | bent and twisted until it was possible to open | the aor. The power used must have been very great and the outside of the safe shows the tuarks made by jimmies all around the door. ‘The fire proof lining on the inside of the door was shattered and the door was pretty well battered up. It is supposed that the burglars were afraid to blow thesafe up, and as they had Saturday night and Sunday’ for thelr work they adopted the more laborious method ot forcing the door open by main strength and the skilifal use of powerful tools. The detectives were at once Informed and inspected the work of the burglars. VALUABLES OVERLOOKED BY THE BURGLARS. The burglars secured $150 in cash, and some old jewelry, which had been deposited in the safe, and was valued at about $70. They took also several bottles of wine from the store. ‘They left undisturbed in the sate a bag of gold and a bundle of United States securities of much larger value than the cash taken. The fact that the burglars left the most vaiuable contents of the safe, together with the bungling character of the work in opening the safe, leads Lieut. Arnold, of the fifth precinet, to believe that the Job’ was not done by professional eracksmen, but by UNSKILLFUL BURGLARS WHO HAD GOOD TOOLS, ‘The marks made by the tools show that the | burglars did not know where to attack the safe door. The door, as stated above, was opened, | not by drilling, but by prying with main strength, Lieut. Arnold examined the premises this morning and came to the conclusion that | the burglars climbed from_a little porch in the | rear to a second-story window, which was unse- cured, then passed through the window and descended to the first floor, where the safe stood. It is not known whether the robbery was committed Saturday night or last night. Mr. Burchell and other merchants were noti- fied by Lieut. Arnold a few days ago, after the nore safe robberies, to look out for their safes, as it was supposed the burglars at work in Baltimore would come to this city. It is not thought, however, that this robbery was com- mitted by the men who were at work in Balti- more. ‘The police report states the loss as_ fol- lows: “A set of amethyst jewelry, diamond pin and two diamond rings, valued at $75; $160 in paper money and three checks for small amounts. Total, $235.” The Thomas Concerts. This was the beginning of the pro- ling which ended Saturday in a verdict de- claring Surgeon Azpell of sound mind.
