Goode,the colored jaui- tor, formerly of this city, for the murder of Officer James North, was concluded last night and a verdict of murder in the second was returned. The defendant’s general good character saved his lite. The penalty for mur der in the second degree is Imprisonment for life. ‘The defendant testified that he was born asiave in Virginia about forty-three years ba, 28 and went to Washington when twelve years old, where his parents, both now very old, are still Ilving. When he grew up he was em- orze W. Riggs for several years. Ten years ago he came to New York and had been em- piosed most of the time since ass waiter tn hotels; and had never been arrested before. He claimed to have killed the officer in seif-de- fence. Harrison Tyrrell, the fcmous “Harrison” of Gen. Grant’s bousehold, wasa witness, He testified that he bad been in the service of the Grant family for five years, and upto about a week or so ago; had known Goode for the past seventeen or eighteen years and had worked in the same house with him for eighteen months, when both were employed by ker George W.
