THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON WEDNESDAY.........November 4, 1885, CROSBY S. NOYES. ceenerneren ee COR ‘The Evening Star has a regular, permanent bana Sde dailycircuiation more than treble that ef any ether daily paper pabluhed in Washington, and cqual to that of all the ‘There 1s no uncertainty about the election re- ‘urns this morning. The democrats win the day in aimost all the doubtful states, and have made threatening inroads on the territory ‘where the republicans bear acknowledged sway. ‘The chief interest, of course, centered In New York. In this state, the democrats find them- seives this morning the undisputed victors, with a plurality of about 15,000 votes. Evi- dently, therefore, the mugwumps do not hold the balance of power in New York, as they £0 fondly hoped. So tar as appears, the battle in that state was fought on strict party lines, and, that being the case, the democrats had the ad- vantage of numbers, for New York is naturally democratic state. ‘It went for Garfield, to be sure, and occasionally a republican state ticket is elected, but some special combination of cir cumstances ts generally required to bring re- publican success. Thus, in 1879, Cornell was elected governor through the Kelly bolt, and Carr was elected secretary of state in 1583 through the antagonism of the liquor interest to Maynard the democratic candidate. In that year, the other democrats on the state ticket were elected by pluralities ranging from 13,630 to 18,842, or just about the pluralities of yes- terday; and this is probably the normal rela- tive strength of the two parties in the state. All that made New York doubtiul in 1984 was the defection of Tammany, which showed itself im the Butler vote and ty stealthy votes for Blaine. Had the party been united, Cleveland's majority would have run high up in the thou- sands. Next to New York, Virginia has attracted the most general attention, owing to the interest felt in Mahone’s fortunes. Few supposed that ‘Wise would carry the state, but it was heid that Mahone might figure out a majority in the leg- ialasure that would re-elect him to the Senate. This expectation has not been realized. The legislature is strongly democratic, and Ma- hone’s picturesque career is probably ended. Senator Gorman has had better luck. The movement in Maryland to oust him has broken dows. The republicans have fared very badly in that state, and talk this morsing in a dis couraged vein. The democrats have an almost unprecedented majority in the legislature, and ‘the control of that body will be in the hands of Gorman’s friends, In Pennsylvania there was another slaughter of mugwumps, as both Quay for state treasurer aod Rowan for sheriff of Philadelphia county were elected In spite of special efforts to defeat them by the enemies of the “machine.” The ‘Yote for Quay fell off considerably from that for Blaine, but be gets a thumping majority still, greatly to the sorrow of those who hoped to give the machine another “lesson” similar to that taught by the election of Gov. Pat- terson. As compared with the vote for state treasurer in 1585, Quay gains, although he was obnoxious tothe independents. From the other states the returns are frag- mentary, gnd do not possess so general an in- terest. In Massachusetts, Governor Robinson is reelected by 25.000 majority, as everyone supposed he would be. In Connecticut the democrats gain a uumber of seats in the legis- lature, but not enough to change the political | complexion of that body. In New Jer- sey the republicans seem to have made some gains in the legislature, probably ensuring the election of a republican to succeed Senator Sewell. In the remove western states and terri- tories, where elections of one kind and another were held, the indications are that the republl- cans keep their power intact. And now everyone will ask, and having ‘asked, will probably answer to suit himself the question: How do the elections bear on the Cleveland administration? The first and ob- vious deduction to be drawn from the figures is that the country at large is not discontented with the government. The success of the dem- erate is not confined to any one locality, nor can it be attributed to special local causes, but is almost as national in ita character as the vote Of last year, Hence, it must be accepted as a ratification of that vote. And at the same time ‘one cannot fail to notice that the statisties of the election point to a re-aetion In favor of party discipline as against the independent theory ‘which has of late years become such a disturb- ing element in politics. Yesterday's result was significantly a democratic victory. The politi- cal free-lance, by whatever title he preferred to be known—independent, mugwump, reformer, gentleman in politics, betterelement or ma- ehine-smasher, was severly snubbed. Of late years the boys and the bosses have had to take some hard slugging from the amateurs, but yesterday they knocked the gentlemen out. ‘The exception to prove the rule, occurred in Chicago, where a much-needed reform in the election machinery was carried. The new law provides for small voting precincts, and is framed very closely after the New York law whieh has been found to work so satisfactorily. $< ‘The New York papers are busy giving reasons for the result there. The Times says Davenport was defeated by the oratory of Judge Foraker and John A. Logan. The World says it wasdue to Roseoe Uonkling, the bloody shirt, and the bloodiess mugwump. The Herald says it was through the labor vote, the stalwarts, the rant of Foraker aud Logan, and by the hypocritical and almost servile professions of loyalty to President Cleveland aud devotion to bis poiiti- cal reforms made by Governor Hill. The Sun thinks it proves that the stalwarts have long Memories aud sharp blades, and says that the democrats voted as the President voted, “for the man who will hold up Mr. Cleveland's hands in his own state and strengthen the in- fluence of his administration.” The Tribune anys republican apathy did it a Cyrus W. Field might as well give up his at- tempt to popularize Major Andre in this coun- try. His monument to that spy bas had a hard time of it from the start, aud last night it was blown to atoms by dynamite. There are too many descendants cf Paulding, Williams and Van Wart iu that part of the country to make an investment in monumental marble to the spy they captured a sale one for any capitalist. Besides, it is a notorious fuct that the nose of George Washlogton, in the bus relic/ on Andre's tomb in Westininster Abbey, is broken off aboutonce in every six months by some re- ‘Vengeful Briton, so that no one can blame the Tappan people for taking repriaais in kind, —$——— It is a well-known fuct that pestilence follows in the lootsteps of war, and if a recent example were needed it might be found in Japan. That country bus always beea exposed to the ravages of cholera, but it was not until the Satsuma re- beliion, some eight years ago, that the disease became endemic. That bivodly revolt strewed she southern provinces with corpses, and to that cuuse can be clearly traced the yearly visi- tations of chvlera under which the iand now suffers. We were fortunate in receiving no such legacy frow our own battle-fields. ‘This year the epidemic in Japan is more se- Verethan usual. The beautiful city of Nagasaki is particularly aMicted. There have been 2,000 deaths in the eity trom the disease, and the total Tr Is A Razz Issraxce, Indeed, that such desirable colorings snd ‘styles in such fushionable Woolen Dress Fab- Fies are offered at such extraordinary reduc- ‘tions. The garden has become one of the most imteresting “institutions” of Phila- deipbia, and its various denizens impart a cer tain color and picturesqueness to the otherwise yather quiet and subdued tone of life in the Quaker city. $$$ ‘The New York World has the following sug- gestive election paragraph: “HONOK TO WHOM IT IS DUE, Boscor Cox Kiixe.” Spratt Order reigned in Mississippi.
