Special Dispatch to Tam Evennxa Stam, “Va., October 27.—One week be- fore election and this city seems entirely free from excitement, But a. great change has come over public opinion here regarding the result, - The question is no longer whethér Bar dour, Daniel or » dark horse shall succeed Sen- ator Mahone. It is Mahone now against the democratic field, and no longer a field of democrats ' saddling up for @ Tace among themselves. The STAR correspond- ent’s information in this matter comes alone from democrats and democratic politicians, Who, while claiming the election of Lee by & majority ranging trom six to ten thousand, de- clare that the fight onthe legislative ticket has shifted from a political conflict proper to an iasue of opposing furses in certain close coun- ties, where the most money s0 applied as to do the most good will win. No such open talk of the use of money for bribing voters of both races in certain districts, democratic as well as Tepublican, was ever before heard in this state. however, cannot given, Mahone, it is feared by the democrats, has received’ from various sources at the ‘@ great deal of money, but neither friend nor foe has power to find out the amount. ‘The Senator is his own sole financial repository. He has no inquisitive committeemen or other Jeaky assistants sharing his cam secrets, Democrats say he even keeps his bank ac- count outside of the state. The able corps of republican newspaper correspondents whom he has had near him will be detalled to watch the fighting In the black belt, and tell how the colored troops fare in the great ment of Tuesday next. Should Mahone, rel now be foreed by his gallant pen warriors of the north, overthrow the cavalcades of Lee, the campaign will take on another new and signi it feature, eon THE TRIAL OF WARD. Fish Gives Further Testimony Against the Prisoner. New Yorx, October 27.—The county court house was crowded this morning with people anxious to gain admission to the court room of oyer and teriainer, where Ferdinand Ward is on trial. He kept Ward'saccount, he said, on May 2d, 3d and 5th, 1884. His bal- nee on May 1st, 2d, 3d, 4th, 5th and 6th was $2,213.98. There were no ‘deposits made on any of those days. The amount was paid to the receiver of the Marine bank on October 15th, and account was closed. Ward's account ‘was Opened in June, 1881. Three checks drawn by Ward came through the clearing house on the morning of May 6th, to the amount of $215,000, Ex-President Fish was next rocalled, and bis gross-cxamination was resumed by Ge. Tracy, “Ido not know,” he sald, “how many lefters I received (rom Ward on May 5th. It is not true that my bank wasin financial difficulty since January, 1882, and that Ward kept helping to Save it. ‘We pressed Ward to return to us the money which he and his firm had borrowed. Ward handed Gen. Tracy a number of letiers to examine the witness upon, and picking out one said: “There is a one, I wrote the letter January 4th, 1882. ‘The letter was dated New \ork, 4th January, 1882, and said: . ‘My Dear Mr. Ward:—You mustarrange mat- ters alittle by yourse.f, I was away yesterday, as you know. "I would be very glad to oblige. Iam lending all my ener- gles to getting matters in decent shape in this lace. .D. F.” PIMT. Fish was examined at length upon the meaning of these letters, and also upon the tes- timony given by him upon his own trial in the United States court, Mr. Fish continued: “On May 5th [had no doubt that we could have gotten relief from other banks had the govern- ment contracts been true as I believed them to be. A refusal to certily Grant & Ward's checks would have caused rumors which would have broken them up, and then our bank ‘would be forced down. I am now staying at the Murray Hill hotel, and I believe the district attorney resides there also. We have had tre- quent talks together, hut not much about this case.” A recess for thirty minutes was taken. pie Aba esa THE ALLEGED CONSPIRACY. JAMES D, FISH GIVES TESTIMONY AGAINST THE PRISONER, The jury having been completed, the trial of Ferdinand Ward was begun in New York yee terday. The district attorney said Ward, on May 5, 1884, presented a check for $71,800 to the Marine bank for certification, giving an un- certified check therefor for $75,000 on the First National bank. Ward recelved the money upon his check from the Marine bank. The $.5,000, check was not honored by the First National bank, and Ward was guilty of grand larceny by procuring $71,000 on It from the Marine ban! The Jury must remember that ‘Ward was not on trial for ruining Gen. Grant and sending bim broken-hearted to the grave, or for sending ‘\o state prison for ten years a gen- tleman highly connected in banking circles, but was merely on trial forgrand larceny. Jas, D, Fish was the first witness called. As he took his seat he leaned over in his chair and glared savagely at Ward, who lowered his eyes. Ward's counsel moved that the jury be dis- missed on account of the statement of the dis- trict attorney regarding Gen. Grant and Mr, Fish, The motion was denied. Mr. Fish began his testimony by saying: “1 aim sixty-elx years old, a convict at Auburn state prison, to which Iwas sentenced for ten years at hard labor.” He then detailed the transactions regarding Fioaph Foaed check, and continued: “I saw Wi on May’5, about 9 o'clock. He camé in on that morning ‘before business hours and asked for the withdrawal of a.certified $8,000 check be- cause an $81,000, against which the former sum was drawn, had been withdrawn, Mr. John H. Carr, the receiving-teller, was present and I instructed him to withdraw the check. When ‘the exchanges came in I found the $81,000 check which Ward said was drawn was presented aud paid by the bank. 1 rang Ward up and told hin. He said it was strange, but it would be all right; he was too busy to come andsee me then.” Benjamin Fish, brother of James D. Fish, paying-teller of the Marine bank, corroborated the latter's statements, The trial will be continued to-day. ————o Mr. Carlisle om Silver.
