GOOD WEATHER AND LARGE ATTENDANCE— SMARP CRITICISM OF A NEW RULE—NET WIN- NINGS OF THE SEASON. The most successful meeting In the history of the National Jockey club closed Saturday with big attendance and « fine day's sport. The average attendance was better tban ever before And the gross receipts went beyond all former figures. The meeting was attended by the best classes of Washington society, and with proper management the permanent popularity of the Jockey club is assured. There was some com- plaint about unfairness in the races, but it had no foundation beyond the dissatisfaction of losers in the betting. The marked success of the meeting was due largely to the same men who have so success- fully conducted the club from its infancy, and who gave their whole time and attention to the ineeding. The rigid exclusion of - improper characters, male and female, from the course is ufeature that meets general commendation. The presence of so Legon ladies of the best tam- ilies of Washington society, on each day of the meeting, wus due to the fact that the at tito Iment have steadily’ refused to. admit to the grounds any persons of even questionable repu- tation, “There has been some sharp criticism by members of the club and others, of the innova- ch excluded newspaper men from the ‘sof the club house, not because these jes were of any special value, but on the ground that the exclusion was a snub to a class Of men who did not deserve such treatment. ‘This Is a matter, however, for the club to regu late, and which’ does not concern the outside ubtie, Pitne Ivy City course now takes its rank among the first of the country, and in racing matters Washington has assumed a place of first im- portance, In_ the closing races Saturday Sprague won the fourth race, with Col.
