THE EVENING STAR. cy WASHINGTO TUESDAY...... CROSBY S. NOYES. ‘The Evening Star has a regular, permanent bona fide daily circelation more than treble that of any ether daily paper pubhshed im Washington, and cqual to that of all the ether duily papers here n ides It ts generally admitted now that the Obio legislature will be republican on joint ballot by a small majority, even if the Hamtiton county delegation is solidly democratic. The state senate will, however, be democratic, so that complications may arise to interfere with the election. The democratsare especially opposed to Senator Sherman, and, failing of other suc cess, they may try to force the republicans to select another man. It ts whispercd already that two or three republican members of the legislature are shaky in their allegiance to Sherman; but It would not be wise to put much faith in such rumors. Nor Is there credibility im another report that Sherman is to turn over the seat in the Senate to ex-Gov. Charles Foster {m return for the support of that politician and his friends tn the presidential race of 1888. Senator Sherman ts too old and wise bird to becaught with such chat as that. a Considerable surprise is expressed by those who have given thought to the subject that, in maxing hts will, the late Cardinal McCloskey should have made no provision for any of his relatives, but left the whole of bis fortune to the cbureh, As to the amount or value of the estate lett by the eminent prelate, the docu- ment in question throws no light what- but it ts understood to have been quite large. Inasmuch, however, as his fortane came to him by reason of his high ecclesiastical position, it is likely that he regarded himself as only holding it tn trust, so to speak, and so bequeathed It to his co- adjutors, to be used by them and their suc- cessors in perpetuity for the benefit of the church, It is possible, however, that he may have made some settlements upon his relae tives prior to his death, with the understand- Ing that there should be no claim upon his estate after his demise, Two neices of the Cardinal have been, it will be remembered, residents of Washington tor along time. One of them ts the wile of Mr. F. D. Cleary, of this city, and the other married Hon. John Kelly, of New York, several years azo. oe A subordinate office-holder in New York has startled the people of that city and disgusted his official associates by sending his superiors a communication stating that there is no ne- cessity for his occupying his position any longer, ax there is no work for him todo! This isa new and amazing departure, and some of the rash man’s friends are considcring whether he ts not a proper subject for an insane asylum. It will be asafe thing tosend him there tor a while, whether the nee physielan’s eer- Ufeate can be procured or not. If he remains atlarge there is danger that other holders of sinecure positions will kill him for having seta revolutionary preeed: ‘The average New York office-holder is a bad mun to interfere with. —_—» + —__ ‘The returns from the p uentary elections in France reassure theve wi ared the growth of reactionary sentiment. Clearly the | nation has no mind for the restoration of mon- arehy. It is stated that the new chamber of deputies will comprise 200 couservatives and ‘334 repuolicans or radicals. This should guar- antee the continuance of the present govern- ment or one in sympathy with it; and it looks, more and more, as if the repubile of France had come to stay. ——— + =—___ Mr. Dorman B. Eaton assumes to take se- riously the eivit service plank of the New York State democratic platform, and, very uaturall fs indignant, For if the convention really had any grounds for its charges, Mr. Eston and his colleagues on the coinmission have betrayed their trast shamefully, and merit instant dis. ami: ff not a criminal prosecution. Mr, Eaton characterizes the plank as “Itbelous,” and proceeds to show very clearly that the charges of favoritism preferred by the conven- ton have no ground whateve — It fs getting rather lute in the day for pirates, and yet an English ship bas just run into Hong Kong ater an exciting experience with Chinese ‘Ocean outlaws. The native fishermen, who ply their trade along the coast, are not above little piracy now and then, if they think they won't be caught, and ali merchant vessels in those waters carry a rusty old gun or two and atew small arms for use at a pinch. But of late years the coust has been so well patrolied by British gunboats that tew outrages on merebantmen have oceurred. Nor have any of our own men- ofwar been captured, thouch a betting man would demand odds on the junks in case of a fight.
