THE EVENING STAR WASHINGTON SATURDAY. October 17. 1885. CROSBY S. NOYES. ‘The Evening Star has a regular, permanent hewn fide duily cirealation more than treble that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal to that of all the ether daily papers bere added together. Mr. Carl Schurz is qualitied to speak for the New York independents, and henee his letter Of yesterday, defining their relation to the state campaign, merits notice. He says he shall support Davenport, because of the two candi- dates he thinks him the better man, He sticks by the President, and denounces Hill as a poli- tician who represents the element in the demo- cratic party “which seeks to baffle the Presi- dent's efforts” atcivilservice reform. He dis- poses of the argument that Mr. Cleveland ts going to vote for Hill by intimating that such » act Is perfunctory on his part, but that really there Is no sympathy between them. ‘Mr. Schurz denies that the independents have returned to the fold of republicanism. They stand, he says, where they have always stood. “We sball be found ready,” says Mr. Schurz, “in the fature. as in the present and past, to support the Davenports as against the Hills, under whatever party names they may ap- pear.” He takes pains to add that it is not the republican platform, but the candidate, that Is acceptable; the platform he regards as objec tionable on at least two grounds, namely, the unfair criticism of the President and the stal- | wart view of the southern question. In short, Mr. Schurz, speaking with confidence for others as well as tor himself, declares that | tigey, $450" mottied calf, solid gilt edges, elegant this is @ transition epoch In politics, Joker the | AOE The Series now numbers 11 vols. tncloding thing to be considered is the man rather than | the stove tw") azui'a new vary plain and neat binding the platform. The loeal frauds in Hamilton county may have an important bearing on the latter if the two parties are evenly matehed, but as the re- publicans will have the Judicial machinery it fs safe to assume that they will not permit themselves to be cheated out of any ot their rights. The frauds in Cincinnatt are said to have been seandalous enough to excite the in- dignation of decent people of all part! ‘The wise-acres are still philosophising over the “lessons” of theeleetion, and they are set- tling down to the conviction that It was demo- eratie apathy that did business, An an- alysis of the vote shows thet the republicans about held their own, while the democratic totals fall off. It is evident moreover that a good many democrats threw away their votes on Leonard. One of the questions to be passed upon con- corned the time for holding the state election. Sofaras appears by the scattered returns on this vote the constitutional amendment alter- ing the time from Oct to November has been almost unanimously adopted. The “Oc tober elections” are, therefore, things of the past. iv A singular demonstration took place in West- minster Abbey on Tuesday. That day, being the feast of St, Edward the Confessor, was spec- | fally observed by the Cathoifes in London, and | the services were concluded by a procession to the shrine of the suint in the Abbey, where the visitors knelt and prayed for the conversion of the British nation. Of course, in his day, and for centuries afterwards, the Abbey was de- Yoted to the service of the Catholic church, and itis not unreasonable that members of that communion should make a pilgrimage to the shrine to pray forthe return of their nation to its original faith. But the incident was never- theless a striking and rather startling one. It might easily set people to thinking, so we are not surprised to learn that after the scene was over, “the question of the propriety of the pro- ceedings was immediately taken under con- sideration by the dean and chapter. $$$ A suspicious feature of the election returns in Hamilton county,as telegraphed from Cincin- | nati last night, is the great uniformity in the | figures given as the majorities claimed for the democratic candidates for the legislature. In | the whole list of fourteen the range is only eighty-two votes. In other words, the highest maiority reported is 398 and the lowest 316, but in most of the cases the difference is much Jess than these extremes. In @ canvass of un- usual heat and interest, with the average indi- Yidual popularity and unpopularity, and with Joeal and personal feelings and prejudices strongly appealed to, !t seems scarcely possible that fourteen men could run so closely together in @ wtal vote of nearly seventy thousand as these figures indicate. The election may have Ween honest and the count fair, but this Striking unanimity of sentiment gives ground for 4 suspicion that the returns have been tam- pered with. In these days of mugwumps and loose discipline in both parties a wider diverg- | ence of opinion will usually be found to exist. It looks now as if there was more in the sus pension o: f Justice Vincent, of New Mexi- 0, than ‘ts the eve. The most important Judicial business of that region deals with the ttle and owner-hip of land, so that it is of great | Consequence that the bench be above the sus- | picion of connivance at this species of traud. | No doubt the investigation now set on foot will | be searching, and if the suspended Judge is | found tobe mixed up in any crookedness he will be given short shri, { early every city finds itself threatened from time to time by more or less cranky claimants, | who assert tn ownership of the tract of land on which the town rests. Especially since Mrs. Gaines’ suc s in New Orteans have these peo- ple come forward with their claims, The latest suiferers are Harlem and Baltimore, euch of | which are claimed to belong to heirs of some | forgotten estate, now worth untold millions, $< There is a very ugly feeling in Cinetinnatt over the election frauds, and if it should ap- | pear that the control of the legislature de-| pends upon the local vote, there may be serious mes ahead. Fora city that sets up as a cen- | ter of culture, Cincinnati can make about as degraded @ spectacie of itself as any town aguing. $e This country of late years has done little to encourage the manufacture of heavy orduanee, | but, thanks to the recent appropriations, this important item tn our military defenses is now: getting some attention. Yesterday a fifty-tour ton gun Was cast at Boston with apparent suc- cons, <_< 2—<——__ Judge Foraker now goes to New York to ex- plain to voters there how to do it. There is to be an Ohio contingent sent at once iuto Vir- giniaalsc, Obio was never loth wo “come to the rescue” and elucidate to her sister states the elements of politics, ———— The New York base-ball “giants” are too big to play the baby game.
